Birmingham shutting down their Academy on 20:56 - Dec 7 with 1387 views | wkj | I have to admit, the decision seems abhorrent but the write up seems quite sensible. The thing that resonates with me is this "Secondly, whilst we continue to field a competitive Under-23s team in the Professional Development League, there lies difficulty in exposing players to the standard of football which renders them equipped and ready for our First Team." Which seems to be something we, and other clubs, probably agree with. As we can see, we're struggling in L1 with playing so many young players at once, and some of the promising youngsters seem to be a shadow of themselves with many of the key players out. The game isn't kind to youngsters turning pro unless they're gifted and it does seem like all academies have a substantial youth turnover.

The point about post-Brexit restrictions is interesting too. Especially if they were going to go the Brentford route. Our academy costs us about £2.5m a year apparently. Which is the same as our salary cap for the entire playing staff in L1. [Post edited 7 Dec 2020 21:02]

Surely post Brexit the importance of producing your own is even greater as can't sign any foreign players really in 2nd tier

Yeah, sorry that’s my point. It is the worst time to shut it down and try that!

I can see Birmingham fans appear split on it. It appears to be split on, yes they sold Bellingham for £30m or so, but how often does that happen to justify the cost of an Academy at that level.
