..did anyone used to write to players / managers?

As a kid I used to send posters to players which they would sign and send back.

Also sent a letter to George Burley once suggesting potential transfer targets. One of those was Mark Stein who was promptly signed!! ....(yes, of course on the strength of my recommendation!).

I wrote to Burley, telling him about a couple of lads at Lincoln who looked useful. Ainsworth and Huckerby...

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

When the Finnish Army was doing its best to conscript Shefki Kuqi (who was having by far the best spell of his career) and Pablo Counago was wasting away in the Reserves on £15000 a week, I wrote to David Sheepshanks.

I suggested that the solution was simple. Tie a tag around Pablo's neck saying 'Finnish Army conscript from Ipswich Town) and despatch Pablo to Oslo on the next plane. With no common language he would be gratefully received and would be togged up to fight the Russkies before he knew what was happening. We could keep Shefki. Two birds killed with one stone.

I also suggested that Shefki's shooting was so bad that every second week the front row of the North Stand was in dire danger of being taken out by a wayward shot, so who in their right mind would want Shefki with a rifle in his hands. The potential for friendly fire mortalities was immense.

Mr Sheepshanks took it well. I received a very courteous reply. Did he not have a Swedish wife, who would have spoken the Scandinavian languages? Possibly. He responded to the idea positively and ended his letter with a Finnish quotation. Intrigued, I had it urgently translated. In very academic Finnish it suggested that I might like to f**k off.

I liked his style.

A lot of my autograph collection from the early to mid 1960's is of signed photos that I sent away to players, including a stamped addressed envelope and nice polite request of course!

Do the Finnish military recruit in Norway then?

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?
