Salary cap and contract extensions 17:49 - Feb 1 with 515 views | xrayspecs | If Town take the option of a further year on player contracts that pre-date the salary cap, is the player salary during this additional year treated in the same way as it was this year, capped at circa £125k per annum irrespective of what is paid? Or will it be treated as a new contract and valued at the full amount?
Salary cap and contract extensions on 17:54 - Feb 1 with 487 views | PhilTWTD | I think as a new contract, otherwise there would have been little point in taking the options on Nolan and Holy's contracts last summer.

If it's just a contract extension, would they not have to be paid at the same rate they were on (as per the terms of the original contract)? Meaning their wages can't be cut down to fit within the salary cap?

Yes, that would be the case, but the wages would be taken in full rather than at a lower rate which is the case with deals signed prior to the introduction of the cap.

Sorry I'm a bit stoopid... so the player would get the same amount, but he would show as a lower amount on our wage bill for the cap (because technically it was signed before the cap). Or would the full amount be on our wage bill, in which case we're a bit screwed?

Player would get the same amount but wouldn't show up as a lower amount for salary cap purposes, unlike their current deal this season. To clarify, Stephen Ward's contract this year is being treated as £113,000 for salary cap purposes. If the club take up the option on that contract in the coming summer it will be treated as the full amount rather than the £125,000 which replaces the £113,000.

And do the same rules apply to clubs relegated from the Championship or do they get a year or two with the allowances but only on existing contracts? If the rules apply from the off, some of the less likely clubs that might be relegated (Derby and Sheffield Wednesday spring to mind) would have a lot of off-loading to do wouldn't they?
