Popped out for a few hours... 14:38 - Feb 19 with 2956 viewsbluelagos

Check my emails and I have

An offer of a holiday to the Maldives, which I can't fly too.
The lastest FCO advice for travel to Chile, where I can't fly too.
2 latest motorbike offers, for bikes I can't legally ride (for pleasure)
An advert for uber, who don't work where I live
An offer on car insurance, which I renewed last month
A couple of offers on winter clothing, just as we are coming into spring.

Swear the fckers are just trolling me...

Ta. It’s on my bucket list!!

Seriously pal, don't let age and/or lack of confidence stop you. I walked to Torres del Paine just over a year ago and we had a couple in their 70s who made it. Took em a little bit longer but they got there :-)

You are only as old as you feel!

I learnt a couple of years ago through a local BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) club in Witham. Took a lot longer than PADI but the training was excellent. Qualified now down to 35 metres and also done some rescue training and Nitrox training.
Did Malta, Greece and a Red Sea Liveaboard in 2019. Red Sea was superb.
Last year could only dive in the UK but did spend 20 minutes at -20 meters with a friendly dolphin off of Portland.
Give it a go and look up your local BSAC club - they prob cant do anything at the mo, but we shd be back in the water soon.

Certainly something to look into once all this is finished, would be nice to actually do something!

Got yourself a nice dive watch I hope!

That makes me 102.

Seriously, I’m not that old and I did some interesting stuff in my yoof - and have skied for 30 odd years. I am reasonable fit the despite beer and wine but oddly you tend to lose your bottle as you get older. I’ve noticed it with skiing over the years. There was a time where I didn’t bother with signs and stuff, now I’m good boy Captain wuss. Physical confidence is an odd thing.

The diving/snorkelling type of stuff I’ve no excuses - just never made the effort to get out there and do it despite wanting to. I will set myself a challenge to do it when this Covid stuff ends. It looks amazing.

Ha, no I don't actually wear a watch although I could be tempted by a Rolex Submariner!

I use a dive computer - straps to your wrist - tells you how deep you are, what the water temp is, how long youve been under water etc etc. Also lets you know if you re coming up too fast, how much decompression you need to do, how long before you should dive again and so on.

Its all good. The gear is costly but you can usually borrow stuff until youve got your own, esp if you dive through a BSAC club.

I’d really love to do snorkelling/diving. It looks amazing. Since I remember the Jacques Cousteau programmes, I’m probably a bit too old for it but one can dream! Brilliant thing to do.

I'm 65 and I had the opportunity to do some snorkelling a few weeks ago, first time in six and a half years but no problems other than tiredness afterwards because I stayed out so long.

My nephew is a bit of a thrill seeker and sky dives for a living. He did some base jumping off the Millau bridge last summer which looked awesome.

They don't do tandems though, I did ask :-)

I didn't really show any interest in a tandem jump, but that's not to say I don't understand the concept. I'm sure it's amazing to do that from such a height!

I did the first step 2,000ft static line which was...interesting.

And somewhat daunting tbh.

Glad I did it because I am not good with heights and wanted to at least try to face that.

I have a few stories that are centred around that jump but they sound better in person over a few beers than they do in written text!

Only ever done one tandem sky dive, maybe one day I'll have the balls to try what you did!

Am rubbish with heights tbh. Walked off a bungee jump once (was all set to go but made the mistake of looking down) at Vic falls. That was fookin high tbf. Managed a very small one in Salta, Argentina, about 40m which was fine.

Many years ago I played snooker for the RBL and through that somehow got to know a group of lads who were in the TA. One day they told me that they were all off to do parachuting at Lympne and had a spare place. Would I like to do TA for the weekend. Yeah said I.

So off we went. We got to the airfield and checked in then spent the evening getting destroyed in Folkestone. Great night, but crawling into a tent at 5am was bad. So training with hangovers commenced. They sort of ran through stuff, made us jump off a box, explained what was going to happen, showed us the packing etc.

Late afternoon kitted out with a headache and a bone dome we were taken up in twos in a Cessna. There was a jump-master sitting on the floor who greeted me and my buddy with a smile and an iron bar. He told us that now we were in the aeroplane we were leaving one way. Gulp.

Up we went. Scared? Er like you wouldn’t believe. We got to 3000 ft and the static lines were attached / checked. My buddy went first, smile etched with terror. You climbed out onto a little ledge that was welded on to the fuselage, clung onto the strut and when the jump master said so, let go. My mate did just that. Oh gawd, there was no way out now thought I. So I followed him. You were told to shout 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004 check. No chute, pull the reserve. I just gave an expletive starting with f as the tail whirled passed my feet.

Luckily the static line did its job, pulling me 180 degrees in a nanosecond (straps were as tight as a gnats chuff) and the canopy was open. What a sensation. Only downside was that we’d jumped late and I was a long way from the field. On the upside, I’d done a lot of flying and knew where I was and just made the field and not the barbed wire fence. It was odd. You don’t hit the ground, the ground hits you!

I was picked up and what a adrenaline rush! All the lads got down safely. One landed on a road, another on the hanger roof. One forgot to turn into wind and ploughed in. But everyone was fine and buzzing. I’m glad I got the chance to do it.

The display team were practising there that day and were using the display chutes that looked like little wings. They were amazing. Good lads too.

I have literally nothing to add to this thread in terms of derring do etc, but just wanted to say that it's TWTD at it's best:

loads of personal anecdotes and genuine encouragement to one thread participant (and all us lurkers) to push some boundaries and go for it!

And not one cross word or bitchy comment in the whole thread!
