If he plays Chambers and Ward at fullback on 10:31 - Mar 20 by Guthrum | We're in with a shout of the playoffs, but not going to make them (let alone win) unless we can get the team performing at least a bit better - and more consistently - than they have been. That requires Cook to sort out which players he wants to use and the formation to put them in. |
But I think that we should be at the formation to suit the players stage rather than the other way round. Paul Cook obviously has his way that he likes to play, which is fine, but if we are supposedly trying to get promoted it seems to me that the best idea is to try to make the best use of what is available now. I know nothing about DIY but it seems to me if you have an urgent job needed but you do not have your preferred tools available but you have tools that would successfully do the job then you use the tools that you do have.

If he plays Chambers and Ward at fullback on 07:48 - Mar 20 by ArnieM | It’s ok to say we’ll get roasted if Chambers : Ward plays .... how about an alternative solution then? WHO would be able to play left back & right back today and be able to hit the ground running ? |
Kenlock? Been very good recently. Bad game last week but so did everyone else. Ward is simply too slow.

Indeed. But you still need to decide which of the tools available are the best to achieve the desired result. Plus acknowleging the work won't be as easy, take longer and the outcome might not be so pretty.

Thing there has to be something with Matheson. Lambert ignored him after his debut. Cook hasnt tried him. So clearly he isnt doing enough especially considei g hes a PC type fullback. Same wolfy. PC ideal cb but not in the squads must mean hes not doing enough either.

Matheson played well against Blackpool, was dropped for the trip to Peterborough where we were abysmal after the first ten minutes, then returned for the horror show against Northampton - he hasn’t been seen since. One bad performance (in a match where everyone struggled) shouldn’t really lead to being dropped like a hot potato. It feels like Gill had his favourites and Cook has stuck with them as he’s had no turnaround time. Saying that, KVY being preferred to him despite being out for a year speaks volumes.

If he plays Chambers and Ward at fullback on 10:34 - Mar 20 by pointofblue | I agree - but surely we can’t expect players who haven’t played for a year to suddenly appear at hit form? Yet Skuse began at Fleetwood and KVY is on the bench today. If a defender goes down before the 75th minute... Skuse I sort of understand, in a desperation kind of way. Cook knows what we need but doesn’t have the options to answer it unless really taking a risk, such as trying a centre back out of position. KVY, when we have Matheson and Woolfenden kicking their heels, less so at this stage - especially as he appears to be made of glass. |
Skuse is also a very experienced player. That can still give an edge, even when match rusty. Plus we don't really have anyone else to fill the Downes role (Bishop isn't really a straight swap). With KVY, it's more a matter of getting the potential first choice up to speed asap. I do wonder if Matheson's loan status counts against him also.

If the final point was the case then Woolfenden would have surely been preferred to McGuinness on the bench today. Skuse starting was always going to be a disaster as he wasn’t ready though I agree the issue is we have no other alternatives - I fear our midfield will be bullied again today.
