Cook’s nightmare 09:09 - Mar 21 with 3780 views | PositivelyPortman | When Paul Cook wakes up this morning, will he regret waiting around, and passing up other clubs, for the Town job? Did he seriously misjudge the enormity of the task at hand? Did he realise what a dire bunch of lazy, incompetents - with one or two exceptions- that he’d inherited? I can’t imagine that he hadn’t done at least some homework on the squad’s lack of ability and their frailties. [Post edited 21 Mar 2021 9:46]

No. He needed a squad though. This idea that he could have had a quality squad of 20 or an average squad of 25+ is absolutely not true. He had a core of about 10 decent players and the rest were average squad fillers.

Cook’s nightmare on 19:47 - Mar 21 with 507 views | chrismakin | Only thing I've wandered is if he's actually quite annoyed about the wins we got just before he came in...... Without those, he'd have come in, no pressure at all with what happens over the next month or so.... then suddenly, despite the squads lack of something....... we're still in the mix for the play off place and boom, pressure on.

Cook’s nightmare on 18:48 - Mar 21 by J2BLUE | Precisely. Do we really think MM wanted the likes of Best, Coke, Bru, Bajner etc etc? It's utter nonsense. |
Yes. Russell Osman put him on to Mings, and that was MM’s thinking. Find another diamond in the dust. As well as those you’ve listed you can add Drinan. He couldn’t even hold down a starting berth at Sutton Utd whilst on loan from us.

Cook’s nightmare on 13:36 - Mar 21 by HARRY10 | That was the odd thing, fans blinding themselves to the squad's inadequacies so as to blame Lambert. It is only now that the Emperor's clothes is not an observation by one child. The current talk is suddenly how bad the players are, and so who is responsible for recruiting them, The former being both obvious, on the pitch and off in the league table. How is it that successive managers have been dragging in freebies and has beens who at best last a season... or two ? Is it bad management, or them having o work with little money. |
Jackson wasn't a freebie. Toto / Nolan weren't freebies. KVY wasn't a freebie. I wouldn't call any of those has-beens either.

Mick also recruited a large number of players, many of whom were cheap punts who had mercifully short Town careers. That's the nature of shopping in the bargain basement. Hopefully Cook, who is experienced in the lower leagues, will have a good idea of affordable targets, although we all said that about Hurst, who basically signed a bunch of duds.

Cook’s nightmare on 17:37 - Mar 21 by chrismakin | Do you can look to sign 4 quality additions, or you can use the funds to bring in 10 players, which do you do, the finances are the same............. This is the situation Hurst and Lambert found themselves in. BOTH failed and chose the wrong options. |
I don’t think quality over quantity was ever an option. We then have to revert to plan B. Every time.

Any manager should feel pressure here to get us in the top 6 in division 3 regardless of the timing. [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 20:30]

Well yes of course, but normally with a transfer window and a pre season to start with, and then another window midway through it if help still needed. In March with 0 training time, with a side who are scared to score etc, it's a different job. But hey ho, it is what it is, lets see if how it looks next week
