I took delivery of Mandolin earlier on today, the slicey thing not the musical instrument, and I cannot imagine how I have got this far through life without one.

Geoff's recommendation

8 stars out of 9 - Get one.

Mind the tips of your fingers.

And also condolences to uncle footers who this week lost his little finger in some machinery at work. We are now calling him stumpy.

Fingers, look after them.

Swansea, you must post a video of your mandolin playing efforts.

I suggest "Ipswich, Ipswich, Ipswich" to the tune of Amazing Grace.

I was talking rubbish. We didn't get a mandolin, we got a ukulele. I can do a picture, but not a video.

It's a nice little instrument: a Kala something or other, only about £60 and sounds really good (we've got a full sized concert harp, so anything not in the tens of thousands is a bargain in my mind!). I've always wanted to learn the guitar, so am going to give this a go first.

No, the chainsaw didn't come with a glove, it came with nothing.

Your advice is still good though.

If you have not already purchased them, I would strongly advise getting anti-vibration gloves to use with the chain saw. I had a pile of large trees made available to me many years ago (yes, a younger man had wood...) and as I worked through them with a very modest chain saw over a couple of days I started to get this tingling feeling in my fingers which would not go away for a couple of weeks. I think I may have avoided carpal tunnel syndrome by the skin of my teeth and have been wary of the effects of power tools ever since:
