I was in a taxi 2 years ago from Belfast Airport to the city centre. I was chatting amiably with the taxi driver & mentioned that my sister had been born in Derry.
"Where?" replied the driver.
"Derry".
"Never heard of it" he said.
"Londonderry".

I was in Derry on business a couple of years back. I asked my host whether I should call it Derry or Londonderry. She said, depends which part of the city you are in. Lovely people from NI. Fascinating yet troubling part of the world. I remember when I first went over to NI on business in the late 90's and I got picked up from the airport by the chap i was visiting. On the drive back to his business, he was filling me in on the area "if you went into that estate, they'd buy you a drink", points to the other side of the road "if you went into that estate you'd be lucky to get out". Then further along "that abandoned building used to be a nice hotel, but after the third time it was bombed, the owners just walked away and it's been empty even since". Brought a lot of things into sharp focus for me. |  |
