It is a shame. I had a vision of Downes and Connolly anchoring the midfield, allowing Dozzell to play a much freer and attacking role.

I don't think Connolly plays central midfield much. Other than Mick, I think everyone has seen him as a centre-half.

Connolly is very much a defender and AD is a natural deep lying midfielder.

Connolly played pretty well in midfield for us. I don’t think we got the best out of Dozzell playing as deep as he did. Just my opinion.

If Cook wants a small but close-knit squad, we will be reliant on players who can be versatile and effective in different positions.

For this reason, and his age and experience, Connolly seems like an ideal signing.
