Don't get me wrong, Hurst was one of the worst managers 09:13 - May 21 with 2915 viewsCheltenham_Blue

we've had in recent memory. Certainly top two in any case.
But some of the stuff that Paul Cook has said since he came in, in particular around fitness struck a cord with me and then I remembered this interview -

Hurst "Surprised By One or Two Things" That Are "Nowhere Near Good Enough" 17th Jul 2018 06:00
New Blues boss Paul Hurst admits he’s been “surprised by one or two things” since taking over at Portman Road, which he believes are “nowhere near good enough” for him and his staff. The Town manager says the sale of central defender Adam Webster - who he doesn’t expect to be the last departure during this window - has allowed him to put his mark on a squad which he believes needs freshening up. 84

It's odd isn't it? This was a squad that had just lost Mick and you would expect a Mick side to have very very high levels of fitness. So much so that at the time, I completely dismissed what Hurst was saying and it just became one of many many alarm bells that started ringing for me very early in Hurst's time. Seems he had a point.

There has been a long-standing problem with 'fitness'. One of the reasons Town have had a bloated squad in recent years is so many of them are permanently injured - the best person to ask why is probably McGoldrick - but asking players to fund their own surgery, as happened to Bishop and the bloke from Rotherham who never left the treatment table indicates a certain cavalier attitude to player fitness.

It got that bad under Lambert and Jim Henry, that when lockdown first happened last March/April, the first team players were told to just 'keep active'. No plans, no nothing, just keep active.

Whereas the academy lads were all given plans etc to keep ticking over till when they could get back in.

They did get given a spin bike as well......!

Think this thread tarring Andy Liddell with the same brush a bit unfair - we had injuries under Mick, but the team was always fit and was able to keep going week in-week out
