They're always hidden or pixellated over here until post-judgement, that seems to be the case for both TV and newspapers. Quite odd, there's occasionally TV/press footage from the courtroom on big trials (before proceedings start, usually) and the defendants will usually cover their faces with books or folders - but if they don't, it gets blurred out anyway for transmission. This seems to be an error by the BBC I think, but I don't know whether German law would apply.
