quick question..... 10:04 - Sep 13 with 2126 views | blueysbackside | Let's just say for a minute we got Liam Richardson in when Cook was appointed.... Is there any guarantee that after making 19 signings we'd be in a better position? It's like saying Morsy will save our season. We just don't know but it appears people are desperate to find a reason for our sorry start when the bleedin obvious is staring them in the face. We have a team of strangers which is why we're playing like one. I can't remember another team/squad who have gone through such massive changes in such a short space of time. We're not going up this season and it could be that we finish no better than mid-table with this lot. And then Cook may or may not be sacked. But this team/squad will take time to form a decent first XI. Surely everyone can see that.

quick question..... on 10:21 - Sep 13 by Keno | To be fair we could have got Peter Cook and Anna Richardson in and not done as badly |
Peter Cook would only have been successful if he had Dudley Moore as his assistant.

As an outsider looking in, is Paul Cook’s heart in it? With all the summer signings I didn’t hear or read too much from him being massively bullish about each one (maybe I missed it). Having been appointed before Gamechanger took over, I wonder what he thought when it was announced Mark Ashton would be CEO, having been interviewed by him the previous summer and it not gone well (for Bristol City job). Just looks like things are drifting, almost like he’s waiting to be relieved of his duties? Or as regular listeners and readers, because it’s your club, do you see and hear an excited Paul Cook?

quick question..... on 12:38 - Sep 13 by blueysbackside | Maybe cos he hasn’t had a chance to field his strongest XI yet? Morsy and Celina haven’t played. Out first choice defensive partneship have played one game together. Our new keeper has played just once. Before anyone says ‘yeah, but Cook made these decsions blah blah’ Yes....but give him more time! |
I don't see that this has anything to do with what I just said. "Lots of managers at this level find a way to get results, including when they're missing players, including when players are getting used to a playing style or new team mates, including when the players available to them are flawed." If he can't manage a transition with a new team so that we remain competitive in the short term then that's a limit to his managerial abilities. If he can't find ways to win games despite missing personnel that's another string to a manager's bow that he doesn't have. If he can't improve players he inherits and therefore has to replace them wholesale, that's another flaw. Other coaches can do all these things, why should we have one who can't? Time, sure, he'll get time. He's not imminently on the chopping block. Maybe his coaching ability lies precisely in getting a system that functions perfectly over time, rather than all those other things? But let's not pretend it's just fine that he hasn't overcome any of these obstacles and that no other manager before him ever has done.

He’s had six Lg games - and one since the window shut. In which we made 19 signings. It’s not like we’re blooding in two or three players, it’s an entire team. And when there are injuries etc, it just makes the issue worse - players already are strangers on the pitch, then new strangers come in. It needs time. At least til Xmas! I referee and watch a bit of grassroots and up to step five. These teams do change significant numbers of players every close season. What I notice is that every footballer out there knows how to play 4-4-2 with an 8 and a 4. Every team in pre-season when getting players together again tend to default back to this, and as the season starts revert to this is plan a isn't working. Last season he could have decided 4-2-3-1 was too intellectual for the dimwits he inherited and gone old fashioned to try to make the play offs. He could have started like that this season to bed people in. These aren't recommendations but observations - the question seems to be moving towards whether PC has a tool other than a hammer to try to hit the ITFC picture into the glass frame with.

"Unprecedented in football". You're joking right? In Summer 2020 there were 3 teams in this division who undertook more extensive squad transformations. He's had 6 games and he'll get more, I'm sure of it. Until Xmas? Not at 0.5 points per game he won't. [Post edited 13 Sep 2021 13:35]
