The trouble was that both the brexiters and the Europeans were desperate for trigger to be pulled. The fact the Europeans were says so much.

Think the EU were just concerned that the aimless dithering ("Brexit means Brexit", etc.) could go on for five or ten years if a deadline wasn't imposed.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Let's hope it's Turkeys, assuming this bloke knows what he's on about.

Another day, another shortage. This time it's petrol, because there aren't enough lorry drivers to deliver fuel — thanks to Brexit. Queues are stretching out from petrol stations across the country as the government denies that there is a shortage - people clearly don't believe a word the government says.

Everything that needs HGV drivers to deliver it, from supermarket food to fuel, is in short supply since Brexit cut us off from Europe's road hauliers.

The government and its supporters have been claiming that there is a shortage of HGV drivers across Europe, not just in Britain. But their proposed solution shows that up as a total lie: they are setting up a temporary visa scheme for... European HGV drivers!

This miserly scheme, capped at 5,000, is nowhere near enough to solve the problem. You can't turn migrant workers on and off like a tap — they were underpaid for years, made to feel unwelcome and unwanted in Britain, and now many have moved on to better work elsewhere. Why would they give that up for some flimsy visa scheme? Why would they trust the Brexit government not to pull the rug out from under them again?

The never-ending crisis is denting public support for Brexit and the Brexit government, and the media are slowly starting to break the silence to talk about Brexit as the root cause.

"I expect many drivers will not return to the UK even if the UK Government allows them to," says Marco Digioia, general secretary of the European Road Haulers Association.

This 'solution' also fails to acknowledge that Britain was previously part of HGV routes that cross the continent and back, until Brexit cut us off — a visa does nothing to restore these. The only long term answer is to restore freedom of movement rights.
