Look after yourself lads and ladettes. Just found out another of my old training partners decided to take his own life.

Feels like someone in my extended circle every few weeks right now.

The nhs do wonderful things for those in need if you ever feel you can’t talk to someone you know.

Deepest sympathies Mullet.

Too many of us have lost someone close through suicide. A family member succeeded at her third attempt over many years. She wasn't terminally ill or in chronic pain, just depressed, yet succeeded in persuading two doctors to sign her off to go to an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland, which is why I now have mixed feelings about moves to make assisted suicide legal.

One of the most damaging things which has been done over the past few decades has been the erosion of mental health provision.

As an example, in Gloucestershire, the number of beds in residential units has been cut by something approaching 90% since the early 1990s. Some of that was the closure of grim old hospitals, but the capacity has not been replaced.

It is a real effort to get help for people, even in a state of severe crisis. Often the police end up having to pick them up, take them to A&E where they are assessed and released in the early hours of the morning, often far from home and with no means of transport. Or they are turned away, their friends told (as I have been) "Can't you look after them?" People in a deranged or suicidal state, needing 24-hour supervision. Care in the Community, they called it.

It’s a total mess - well at least it was when I moved down under 8 years ago.

The main problem is that the decision to close the beds and move to a community based model is the 100%, evidence informed right call. Hospital beds are the absolute last resort that should be for the very very unwell - those who pose a threat to themselves or others.

However, that requires an investment in community based services, including some community based residential services (but not too many) - an investment that was never enough when the closures happened and which has been eroded ever since.

I’m 10 days away from finishing work leading a government taskforce (in Australia) on the future of mental health services for 0-16 year olds. The lack of current services in the community is astounding.

Everyone, just as a general piece of advice from someone who designs mental health services, always always seek help. There is no stigma with saying you’re struggling. Please never it get so bad that suicide is an option.

Mullers - take care of yourself - there is a lot of vicarious trauma associated with losing someone to suicide.

Thanks all.

Since the summer my mates partner and a former student who was only 19, all went. There has been a spate of suicides amongst lads in the MMA community too who are all friends of friends at least.
