Fit the players to the system or the system to the players?
That's always been the conundrum.
PC wants to play 4231. He doesn't seemingly ever worry about the opposition. We cried out for years for managers to do their own thing and not set up to just stifle the other team.
MM kept us in the Championship by setting up teams to negate the opposition. We ground out draws and the odd turgid win. It was deadly dull.
Now we have the opposite. An almost gung-ho mentality that says "we're better than a well organised Championship honed team like Rotherham".
Well we aren't.
But what's the answer? Go back to setting up to stifle the other team - we might have ground out a draw at Sunderland then; and a draw last night. Is that what we want (again) ?
The club threw out virtually the entire playing deck in the close season. We then picked up a whole host of players - some we planned to get; others just fell in our laps - Morsy, Celina, Aluko, Edwards, - none, I suggest ,we went out to get.
So now we have a manager who wants to ignore the oppostion, knows exactly how he wants to play, and yet, sadly and a tad unfortunately, cannot yet find the perfect 11 to choose from.
Mick Mills said it last night. By now PC should know the best 9 or 10 in his matchday squad. The problem seems to come in the players that form part of the three that play behind the striker - any permutation from Selina, Burns, Aluko, Edwards, Chaplin, Harper even. Can you truly decide. It's not about sstting out to stifle opposition - but to utilise your resouces in the best way.
His system requires flying full backs, we haven't got them for one reason or another, so you can't set up to play that way - you have to set up in a way that gets the best out of what you have and he can't do that. |  |

Was surprised not to see KVY start given the absentees further forward on the right, we needed some sort of outlet. Edwards could have been an option for RW too. Instead we just looked totally muddled and turgid down that side. |  |
