I think the question “so if we do sack Cook, who do you actually suggest?â€ï¿ 10:13 - Dec 6 with 1136 viewsunstableblue

… was actually really valid. The answer was typically “that’s a silly question and shouldn’t influence if we should get rid of a failing manager… we are massive and have loads of money, there will heaps of candidates”

I do get why that was a common response. But we look across the names in the frame and it’s very uninspiring. We HAVE to get this right. Ashton has to get this right.

It seems head coach is the role, working for Probert and Rolls - is that an enticing position??

I think the new structure cuts the field down a bit. Maybe in a good way.

I just can’t see Ryan Lowe leaving a successful Plymouth, seeing how his fellow scouser has faired at Town, and breaking the relationship with existing scouser technical director Dewsnip.

Appleton seems to be ideal for Ashton, and I think we should have got him instead of Hurst. But he’s hardly pulling up trees.

Yallop is ridiculous, the level and critically pressure in US football is a different and lower level.

Houghton type managers? The games moving so fast…. Is he outdated. A Pearson type? He’s been a flop at Bristol although he’s inherited Ashtons mess.

It all comes back Liam Manning… and his assistant. Progressive, modern, Ipswich ties. But I think he’ll just be seen as too green, too unproven.

Or go abroad?

At least hopefully McGreal gets announced as interim to galvanise the team and gets some points over the next 3 games

Lowe would be looking at a huge wage rise though as well as a much greater ceiling with us. That will be the attractive part of it for him and the easy part of the 'sell'.

For that same reason, I wouldn't be suprised if we had a mid-lower table Championship Head coach come in.

In Appleton's defence, the guts were ripped out of his Lincoln City side in the Summer. They lost Jorge Grant, Brennan Johnson, Morgan Rogers, Alex Palmer, Tayo Edun and Callum Morton, that's a lot of quality to lose from a mid-sized L1 side.

There was a good article in The Athletic about 3 weeks ago talking about how the smartest clubs upgrade their managers when they see an opportunity, regardless of how the current manager is doing. Think Potter with Brighton or Tuchel with Chelsea.

I really hope we've seen an opportunity somewhere, because this feels very "shoot first ask questions later" otherwise.

Am sure Lowe would be attracted also by the 28k sell out over the 16k sell out crowd

Just can’t see it.

I wonder what the perception of Ashton is in footballing circles??

He spent a long time to not find anyone and effectively promote a coach and Bristol City, and ended on Pearson, who has temperament question marks.

God I hope we don’t feck this up?!

Weirdly, I'm not too worried. I just don't think it's anywhere near as hard a job here as Lambert and Cook have made it look!

How do you know who is in the frame?

The likes of Lowe/Manning/Appleton have the chance to double their money, inherit the best squad in the division and work for an ownership/management group that have the financial clout/resources to build a top end Championship/Premier League club on and off the pitch. With the best will in the world, the ceiling of MK Dons, Plymouth and Lincoln in the imminent future is mid table in the Championship at absolute most. They would all jump at the chance.

It is rare that a manager not in the betting odds long list, does NOT, then get appointed

https://www.bettingodds.com/thesackrace/teams/ipswich-town

Joining a club is not just about money and squad... its about fit to the project, and fit to the leasdership team they are going to have to work with... Ipswich are in the mire at the moment.. very underachieving players, and a nervousness/fear in the fan base.. Manning and Lowe have good current shouts for play-offs/promotion

One good bit of new is that Manning knows Ipswich and MK Dons may sell in January

This is fairly standard level of change for league 1 thou, as said on here by many posters in defence of attacking Cooks own churn.

So by rights he should be doing better than 15th, which perhaps says something about lack of planning for annual churn?

Remember even though he lost those players he got the best midfielder at Town, The Bish.

It is, you're right. Although churn when you're Lincoln City and churn when you're Ipswich Town are very different problems, I'd say.
