Think it's a cross base. Would have been the base for a large Celtic cross like the Kell's cross. But even earlier, so cross was possibly wooden ( v rare). It's like the model T Ford of Celtic crosses/cross bases. It and the cross would have been brightly painted an quite a spectacle for 6th century Leitrim
So, on the basis that the two oldest remaining denominations are the Armenian Orthodox and the Ethiopian Orthodox, are you going to suggest to the more venerable of the local community that it was originally done out in red, green and gold, maybe would have been just the thing to inspire Bob Marley, then pass them a modestly rolled and packed 'sacrament'?

Interesting Leiters.
Spent the last 10 minutes looking at Celtic crosses online!

I did mention to some the other week that there does appear to be possible links between the early Christianity of Ethiopia and the West of Ireland. Mumbled Sellasie I, every time I mentioned it, but seem to have a got away with it. It's actually when I try to explain that the Emperor was the world's rightful leader, conquering lion of Judea etc that they give me the doubting looks

Shame there's no sign of the cross itself left.
You would imagine that a wooden cross wouldn't last that long. But I recently read that a priest on Iona in the 7th-8 Century talking about 3 wooden crosses still standing on the island that were put up by Columcille ( also from the West of Ireland) 100 years earlier. Guess paint etc used to preserve um

Doesn't wood get preserved surprisingly well in bogland sometimes? Something to do with ph values?

Does indeed, if one was ever thrown or deliberately deposited into bog it's probably best chance of seeing one. There is a large bog about 100 meters south of it.....

I don't normally do much community work as I find it way too much hassle. But couple of years ago a farmer not far from me dug up this v large carved stone with a cross carved into it. The community then got a heritage grant to find out more about it and why it was there etc. Because it was so local, a couple of months ago I agreed to take the job. The stone is very early Christian (5th-7th C) pre Roman Christianity in Ireland. But part of the job involves me talking about the project with community groups. This involves me talking about pre Roman/Celtic Christianity in rural north leitrim villages. The school groups are fine but you should see some of the reactions I get from some of the older community groups. At least half the audience clearly think I'm making it up as I go along but they are just to polite to tell me. And still not managed to sneak the herb is the healing of the nation in yet

I am afraid to say on my visit to Malta I was bored a little.
Paceville was ok for a night out and my hotel - Hilton, St Julians Bay (look at me) was lovely with a bar overlooking the bay, outside of that, not much to write home about.
Would have been a lot more entertaining if you'd had weed
