Car Service Advice needed 15:01 - Dec 23 with 2825 viewsPinewoodblue

Just booked on line to have my Renault Serviced. Cost of service and MOT is just over £140

Renault recommend replacing coolant at a cost of £168 which seems a tad expensive. Car 5 years old but, thanks in part to Covid, covered less than 23,000.

What is the benefit of replacing coolant and what risks involved if not having it done?

Service and MOT price reasonable but coolant change is hugely overpriced.

Main benefit is it will stop the water freezing in the winter or overheating in the summer both of which could cause a lot of damage. The rust thing is a smokescreen as no one leaves it in that long!

I agree with the others on here. The service charge sounds ok but the coolant cost is eye watering. It does need replacing. I’d use an independent or a Halfords for that.

My mate has a five year old Mondeo with which he had a service.agreement. The main dealer in Bromley phoned him up and said all was done. Would he like the air conditioning regaled for something like £40. He said no thanks. They said ok and that they would just road test the car before letting him know to collect it.

They phoned half an hour later to say a load of warning lights had come up on the dashboard. 5 days and £850 later, he got his car back. They took him to the cleaners. He uses an independent garage now. On the flip side, Honda main dealers John Banks in Ipswich and local to me in Orpington have been excellent

If you think £168 is steep to have the coolant replaced you should try owning a bmw!

Fortunately it’s a company car but I had the brake pads replaced on all 4 wheels earlier this year and I saw the invoice which came to the grand total of £528!

It't how main "stealers" make their money. It's not the cars, it's all the add ons.

As in many cases the main dealers have far greater overheads than a smaller independent garage, that’s passed on in their hourly labour rates. Heard a rumour that ipswich Audi is current charging labour at £125 per hour, not sure if that’s true but I’d imagine their over heads at that location are eye watering high so it seems entirely feasible.

Was talking to the owner of my indie garage of choice yesterday and he reckons that car manufacturers are making his job harder and harder, wherein a large amount of the servicing and repairs require dealer only, due to all the specialist tools and software. Citroen are one of the worst for this, but other marques are fast catching up.
