I think CIL is now deep within the German government.

The Germans went as far as to ban the flights taking anti-tank missiles from the UK to Ukraine from flying over their territory.

They are so desperate for Russian oil and gas (see also the pipeline debacle) that they aren't willing to anger them.

It's an incredibly poor position from the Germans and certainly not one we should expect from a leading nation.

I gather the Germans don't want to lock Russia out of that payment systems thingy if Ukraine is invaded. On one hand, fair enough - how would they pay for Russian gas? On the other, it might be time they picked a side and live with past energy policy mistakes.

You know what I mean. I think it's applying a level of competence to him which simply doesn't exist. Even without being an asset, your points are true in the general case, he's certainly been helpful to Russia with what he has "achieved". SB
