Quitting jobs on 10:47 - Jan 26 by Durovigutum | It reminds me why we shouldn't be attempting to model ourselves on the US employment "system". It also baffles me that people with so few employment rights, who can be fired on the whim of a bad boss, think unions are a bad idea. The definition of Stockholm Syndrome? |
Sounds like they are basically bullied and brainwashed into thinking unions are bad. That sub has been a massive eye opener. I always thought of America as the land of large salaries but it really does seem to be a two class system. A real contrast to my history of reading finance blogs where the author makes it sound like it's easy over there to earn $100k+ and retire early.

Salaries are higher, but the cost of living with health care, college etc is significantly higher. I'd rather our system than theirs.

Not higher for most of them if they're on $12-$15 an hour like many of them seem to be. Admittedly that sub is not going to attract anyone on decent money but the conditions they face are horrific.

I was talking about the 'professional' level job as being higher tbh. At the lower end it is horrific, with even average people sometimes working 2 jobs
Quitting jobs on 11:59 - Jan 26 with 419 views | bluelagos | Sounds like a nice position. You have a new job lined up and an employer who rates you and wishes to keep you. As others have said, an employer cant refuse your notice, so if you want to hand in your notice, a simple polite one line email will do the job, copying in HR. But you have an opportunity here. In my career I always found annual reviews and payrises somewhat lacking. What I did do was maximise any moves financially partly knowing I was unlikely to get a massive payrise ordinarily. So you have 2 possible conversations. One is with your current employer and one with your future one. "I really want to join you but...I am being offered 10k more and I have to think about my plans for a new home/kids/partner etc. " Whilst you dont want to come across as greedy, I'd argue there's not many occasions in your career when you have the upper hand, so get as much out of it as you can. That's my take, and based on the fact that employers will happily dump you if necessary, so dont feel loyal, look after yourself.
