I think it’s good for expectations next season that we’ve come down to earth in recent games.

It’s patently obvious that our talented attack and midfield has stuttered throughout the season. And we need a full team performance to beat teams. Contrast that with Sunderland who we outplayed 3 out of 4 halves yet they took 4 points to our measly 1.

I’m not sure exactly what the difference has been between us and the top teams. But I think we often seem to lack belief in the final third whereas opposition teams have kept theirs and even gained belief the longer we’ve failed to capitalise.

There’s no blame attached as we have talented individuals and I’m sure that McKenna has identified solutions (like Jackson leading the line, which nobody was asking for). McKenna has done a great job making us more defensively solid to cover the patchiness of our attacking performances. I look forward to him having a summer to get the attack firing. But getting that intangible belief/confidence clearly isn’t something we can just flick a switch to achieve.

Great post Darth.

I think as a fan base and a management team we’re hopefully going to be a bit more realistic given the way our form has tapered off. Some of the fans forums have been a little too self congratulatory given our league position.

I’m confident we’ll find the right players and formula for next term, but we really do need to work out how to win more games and score more goals. The great play should continue and be celebrated, but we need a ruthless streak. That lack of belief in the final third, that killer striker.

You’re so right to point out Sunderland - we were better across the two games, but got only got a point, below is a post I made earlier comparing our performances across all the top teams…

So team for tonight? any changes? form against top teams by unstableblue 19 Apr 2022 11:06
Really would be good to win and beat what looks like an automatic promotion team.

A team that had similar squad flux to us last summer, but hit the ground running and haven't looked back.. with an approach that frankly is more effective than us. Glad to see McKenna stating he doesn't want the season to fizzle out.

As you'll have seen I have a bee in my bonnet about TWTDers stating the league is sh!t and we should be out of it... we have to earn the right to be out of it. We are now 11th and a loss tonight would see Pompey and Bolton favourite to finish above us. Someone also made the questionable point that we've looked the better side in all the games against the 10 above us... I'm not sure that's the case, here's my view:

Wigan - D - think we edged the away game, lets see how we do tonight
Rotherham - LL - Smashed at home, better of first half away, but then couldn't live with their increased tempo
MK Dons - DD - MK impressed me in both games, especially at PR, we did well at their place, but say we're equal
Plymouth - LW - perhaps should have won away, and much better at PR, but not enough goal threat from Town
Wycombe - WW - they dominated initial stages at theirs, but in performance of season tore into them, deserved win at home. But Wycombe have refound an incredible consistency we have not matched, coming into form for play-offs
Sunderland - LD - we were so dominant at the stadium of light, but could not score and got punished, we edged the home tie, but again didn't score enough.. Sunderland come out on top of us I'm afraid, despite our performances - AND we played them in weak form
Sheff Weds - DL - we just about edged home game, but it was close, away we looked good but they were so much more effective, and created heaps of chances. Owls better than us. Bannon - wow.
Oxford - DD - home we did enough to win, away we should have won, just let that header in... think we were the better side over the two legs
Pompey - WD - they were woeful in the away game... terrible first half, then smashed them second. Home game we were the only side that should have won, but failed to convert chances AGAIN!
Bolton LL - for me, despite some nice play at their place, we were well beaten this season by Bolton

A real mixed bag, but overall if we'd had a true goal threat, we perhaps would have had a much better record than P19 W4 D8 L7

As for team tonight... central mid, left wing back and striker/10s are our current weakness, could this work?!:

----------------Walton
Donacien (if fit) Wolf Baggot
Burns---El Miz-----Morsy-----KVY
-------Chaplin------Celina
---------------Piggot (give him 90mins)

I write piggot despite looking very lost on Saturday. Norwood needs to leave, despite is positive traits

We seem to be a team that concedes late goals now also. Danger zone for us is the 80-90+ minutes in a match when we seem to switch off.

Looks like 11th is our spot now and we are here to stay till next season. Mid-table division 3.
