Clive Thomas 19:03 - May 10 with 4318 viewsjontysnut

Leafing through his autobiography. What a pompous, bitter old windbag he was. He couldn't understand the reaction to his decisions in the 1975 semi final replay and bore a grudge easily. After saying that Bobby was not fit to manage England, he went on to add

"other players from the Ipswich side who should never in my opinion been near the England squad - they would not have been 10 years ago - are Russell Osman and Terry Butcher. Butcher appears to have no particular skills other than to ensure no one passes him...they are people who by their attitude do very little to help the game and who should not be copied by young people".

Git.

One point of trivia is about Thomas and Ipswich is that he refereed the 1982 cup tie at Luton in which Terry Butcher broke his nose and spent several weeks out injured due to blood loss.

I was a member of a local golf club where a very well off member had been captain and president as well as a member of the MCC. He had four sons, one of whom played cricket for England, and had season tickets for the whole family. He was in short a man of impeccable stature, well liked as he made time for everyone.
He was watching a match at Portman Road when the Welsh idiot was officiating. After one decision this gentleman stood up and shouted "Clive Thomas you are an absolute f******* w*****" and then sat down to the astonishment of all around.

Hamilton's "goal is at about 11:40. He clearly wasn't offside & Thomas admitted afterwards he hadn't disallowed it for offside. He eventually said that he had disallowed the goal because he couldn't believe Hamilton could have deflected it in legitimately without using his arm, although it looks to me as if he chested it in.

My mate is a staunch Evertonian (this season has been particularly amusing!) He still goes on about that goal and Clive Thomas. He knows I'll respond with '75 and worse profanity. The conversation quickly deteriorates until we've both let off some steam. Been like this for decades!

When he was announced for the 78’ semi my young heart sank, but we gave him nothing to work with that day. Even I could see Big Al’s handball!
