Dalian Atkinson case 20:48 - May 18 with 636 viewsNthsuffolkblue

How long does it usually take for a retrial date to be set?

2 July 2021 retrial on Bettley-Smith was ordered.

Nearly 6 years since he was killed.

Can't be very pleasant for the defendant living with it hanging over them either. Can almost foresee the one who has been found guilty being released before her case is decided!

"Can't be very pleasant" for her?

I've heard that it wasn't pleasant for Dalian Atkinson's family, as well.

In fact extra-judicial killings by Police Officers tend to be pretty unpleasant from start to finish.

Dalian was brutally (incredibly brutally, going by some of the evidence, which I am not going to repeat here) killed during a mental health episode. He should have been helped by a Community Psychiatric Nurse, not set upon by the Police.

"Can't be pleasant..." for her. FFS. It's not her feelings that we should be talking about.

I tend to agree with you, although we have to temper that with the fact she has not been found guilty. It was more a comment on the delay in the justice system generally than specifically her case.

And, the flip side is that there are people who will be found guilty walking around completely free and failing to face the consequences for far longer.

She wasn't found "Not Guilty", the jury failed to reach a verdict on a specific charge, basically that she used illegal violence herself in the incident that killed Dalian.

If two black people had been involved in an incident in which a white police officer was killed, and physical evidence indicated that one of the individuals inflicted extreme violence whilst the other participated in restraint, but no more than that can be proven as the individuals concerned won't say anything further to incriminate the second individual, how would a jury respond?

There is a lot more that could be said, but shouldn't be now as the case returns to court.

Indeed. As well as what I said that she has not been found guilty, she has not been found "not guilty". Hence why she is still awaiting retrial.

In similar news US police badly misused a taser in this incident too:
