There are alternatives this season, though - Ben Compton, Sam Hain and Harry Brook have all performed well enough to earn call-ups - only Compton has experience opening though, and really needs to get picked now while he's in incredible form, to give him the best chance at test cricket.

Zak Crawley on 10:23 - Jun 27 by Chrisd | It’s ok when things are going well and we are winning test matches, but let’s see how they get on against India in their backyard on pitches where the ball turns square or against the Aussies when bowling with hostile pace. If we then keep getting skittled out then that’s when I can see the critics begin to question this gusto approach. I still feel we need to find a balance. |
Yeah - when you've got Root, Bairstow & Stokes coming in 4,5,6 it's sensible to pick openers who have the best chance of seeing off the first 30 overs, rather than having Crawley in to hit a streaky 25 every now or then, or Buttler to try and tee-off which might come off once in 5 or 6 tests.

Lees looks like he’s gaining in confidence the more he plays for England. Crawley, yes there’s bound to be question marks about his place now as we discussed yesterday. Nevertheless, if a change is made - like Ben Compton - that player needs time to feel comfortable in the side, that won’t come from being encouraged to hit and out and get a few low scores, the confidence will crumble. We seem so top heavy with aggressive stroke players and even Moeen Ali is trying to sneak back into the test side by making the right noises, not for me. Find that balance with positive and resourceful play. England’s play has been very exciting this series, but you can see it has the potential to be very kamikaze as well.

My view here is bring Ben Compton in. There are 4 tests left this summer. Give him all of those and the 3 Pakistan tests at the end of the year. Tell him to just play, not to worry about his place, and see how he gets on.
