It has gone quickly. It’s sad how the team has gone down the pan since then. Morgan made a big difference. Cricket is the only game I can think of where the captain makes such a difference. I enjoyed the Cricket World Cup. I had just stopped working and had most of the games on tv. Great fun. I went to one game the first day of my retirement. The one at the Aegis bowl between West Indies and S Africa. It rained all day and bar a few overs at the start. My mate and I arrived, after a delayed rail journey, just as the players were walking in and the rain began to tip down. You couldn’t make it up. But heck, we had a really good day hanging out with a few libations to pass the time. The final was epic. NZ deserved to win really,, but that’s the way it goes. Drama to the end.

It's one of the few team games where the Captain has a significant, real-time tactical input during the match (deployment of bowlers, field placing).

The team has " gone down the pan since then"? Really?

Not the test team. I might be being harsh on the 20 and 50 over team, but India seem to be exposing the frail batting cruelly and without Morgan they don’t look the same team to me. The 20/20 World Cup and the 50 over version, presumably next year, will prove or disprove my pessimism.

So when you say " since then", what you mean, is we lost the last match badly, on a wicket that was very odd for ODI cricket, with a team that was missing almost its entire first choice bowling lineup. Bearing in mind Morgan's only been gone for one game, isn't it a bit early to be making judgments on how badly he's missed?

Yes, I was far too hasty and shouldn’t have said it. You are right and there is no point in commentating until a number of games have been played against different opposition on different surfaces. I guess the 20/20 hammerings coloured my mood and I just liked how cohesive the team looked under Morgan. The opposite I suppose is Joe Root - he never really looked like a Captain to me. I don’t know why, he just didn’t. It’s often, but not always, the way with great players
