Penny Mordaunt, an analysis 09:16 - Jul 14 with 2850 viewsArnoldMoorhen

If like me you didn't know very much about Penny Mordaunt other than "Been in and around the Cabinet, not really made anything her own, massively pro-Brexit" and wondered "How on earth did she become the favourite?" And, more importantly, "Who would benefit from her becoming PM, and what are they expecting in return?"

Then you might like to read this helpful article. And then be scared. Be very scared indeed. Especially if you, your children or grandchildren live or work in Felixstowe/Harwich and might have or need a job in what could become a deregulated Free Port under her approach...

(You have to get past an irritating rhetorical flourish of calling her "In for a Penny" which isn't as witty as the writer obviously thinks it is, but other than that it is well worth reading).

In terms of voting record, I think the important thing is how it corresponds to the majority of Conservative MPs. To be honest, reading this overview in the Guardian, it's probably between her or Sunak for me out of the frontrunners, as it appears as though Tugendhat will be out next unless he somehow makes a breakthrough in the debates.

Where do you stand on the quotes used in that piece though?

Frost is being quoted directly and neither the Guardian nor the authors are responsible for his comments.

Seems a reasonable thing to report to me, especially when talking about a candidate for the position of PM.

His quotes are reasonable. I'm more talking about '

Another anonymous Truss backer said overnight it was the wrong moment to install a prime minister who needed “stabilisers”'.

Again I don't disagree. Liz Truss makes Teresa May look like a charismatic raconteur. But it's not far above the S*n saying: 'a source said the couple have been arguing for weeks and are living in different houses'. It's sort of polished gutter journalism.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

There doesn't seem to be any sweetcorn standing does there?

Not that the party would vote for it if there were!
