England XI for the 2nd Test 13:47 - Aug 24 with 2463 views | Chrisd | https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/62660305 Naturally, Crawley's selection will be the big talking point, but I think our bowling looked and has looked quite ordinary at times this summer. I appreciate both Anderson and Broad have been terrific bowlers for England for a long time, but how do the younger bowlers get their chance if these two keep taking up two spaces in the XI? We just aren't moving forwards. For me, it's one space and you rotate them for each test. Feel for Potts, but I still feel Anderson and Broad have too much influence in our side. Strange to see England three down and Crawley not one of the casualties. Did he not bring out the drive today? Good to see he has hung on in there, shows he can do it but wonder if it has been at the expense of the shot that brings him a lot of runs.

Complete reversal from the 1st Test. A good watch today. The pitch will be nasty on days four & five, Bazball might work here!

England XI for the 2nd Test on 18:40 - Aug 25 by Steve_M | Been a good day for England all round, things to improve on - bowling at the tail, Root with another slightly loose dismissal - but they made the best of the conditions early on and that last partnership has whittled down the SA lead. Crawley got totally becalmed at one point, moving from 5 to 9 took ages, but by staying in he helped give Bairstow the platform to score quickly. The target has to be a big first innings lead and the chance of an innings win. That sets things up nicely for the Oval in a fortnight. |
Completely agree about our bowling at the tail, we have the worst record of all the test playing nations of getting out 9,10 and 11 in recent years. We seem so entrenched in stats where bowling short shows it can work, that we seem incapable of adapting the plan in the middle and to the conditions. I thought SA did a great job on our tail in the 1st Test and kept bowling that nagging line and pitched it up. We just seem to stick religiously to the short pitched stuff, even if it isn’t working.

I'll watch the highlights later but when I was driving and listening earlier, pretty much every ball being described was 'short', Why do we keep doing this? We get seven wickets doing the right stuff then all of a sudden, we abandon what has been working and then put the field out and bang it in. I notice the first ball after tea was pitched up, and what happens? lbw and out.

I do believe the England set up take in the stats and data which then influences the team’s bowling approach, but since 2019 the Aussie average of bowling at 9,10 and 11 is a wicket every 11 balls, ours is 21. That’s a big difference, especially if they are getting runs and the games are tight. [Post edited 25 Aug 2022 20:00]

In the 40 odd years I've been watching listening to Test Match cricket, the thing that always gets repeated by the experts when bowling at tail enders is to bowl at the wicket. I barely remember England doing this.

It's not rocket science is it, finishing off the tail for England isn't a problem unique to this team, it's been a problem for quite some time The only thing I would say, is that the conditions got easier. I always think it the tailenders are batting well, it gives good hope to your top order

You think that's our tactic? Bowl pies at their tailenders and think that Crawley will be full of confidence and vigour when we bat? It would explain a lot.
