Did this deserve a red card? on 08:26 - Sep 5 with 1216 views | ArnoldMoorhen | Two old country sayings suggest a red was harsh, unless he took a dump: If it's yellow give a yellow, if it's brown send him down. A card in the hand is worth poo in the bush.
Did this deserve a red card? on 08:43 - Sep 5 with 1156 views | HighgateBlue | It's surely not dissent or unsporting, so it's not a yellow for that. It seems to me that it's deliberately leaving the field of play without consent, so it's a yellow for that if the law is followed. I can't see that it's a red unless it's deemed "using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)". Is it offensive if nobody can see it? I can't imagine that the opposition or the one man and his dog watching were genuinely offended or insulted..? Give him a yellow card if you must, have a bit of bantz with him, and get on with the game. Although I guess at least this has generated a lot of publicity and hence maybe a bit of income.

Maybe: Yellow for leaving the field of play without permission. Second yellow for time wasting. Disappointed the original headline writer didn't go for a "went for a dribble outside his area" or "relieve pressure" pun. The Shepton Mallet fans need to greet every goal kick with: "Oooooooooooooooooooooooh, hedge wee keepaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!"

Time wasting is an interesting point. I guess as the ball had gone out (no jokes) he probably was holding up play. But then, if the ball had gone out, is it really impermissible for a goalie to leave the field? (presumably they have no ball boys and the keeper has to go and get the ball). The yellow card offence is leaving the field, rather than going a particular distance after you've left it, or doing something particularly odd once you've left it. I'm not sure whether it was two yellows, or whether the ref just gave a straight red for offensive action. I guess the answer is to have a hedge planted within the field of play. If there's a tree on the boundary at Kent County Cricket Club, then why not! All a bit silly really, but it makes for a fun story and some bantz.
