Just been announced on the BBC website, she was only 70. Those books about Thomas Cromwell had me hooked, could hardly put them down.

That's very sad news. Not just the quality of her historical novels, but also what she said and wrote in the media on various subjects.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Has the obituary been published yet? I’d not seen the Mantel piece.

Too soon?

Good grief.

I suppose you do not believe people are gone until we bring up the bodies...

A truly sublime writer. I've just finished The Mirror And The Light. At 875 pages it was more of a you can hardly pick it up, but the writing is so exquisite you'd happily read another 875 pages.

She was the absolute opposite of one dimensional 'action-packed' crap like Dan Brown etc. Just as with the likes of John Le Carre, she could write gripping prose where very little action happens and the story is all in the characterisations and implicit motives of the characters.

I recently finished Bring Up The Bodies for the third time or so, and it's the sort of book that slows you down and takes you there and lets you smell the scenery and hear the background. Fantastic.
