that really is embarrassing

However bad Hunt is you can vote him out and vote for the candidate you want. Under PR you cannot

Under PR the locals do not decide who their candidate is. Someone is allocated to them after the election

I. matters not a jot how the legislative is made up as (also the excecutive) the party with the most MPs will always win - other than being brought down by legislation not being passed. Achievement, nil

2. Makes no sense (see above)

4. Quite the opposite - reasons as previously given

5. Again not true

You are arguing for a system where you cannot question the candidate before the election, or check his/her previous voting record as you are not told who he/she might be - and which ever party you might vote for, there is no knowing what policies they will dump and what they will accept as part of being a coalition

Both remove local accountability and put the power in the hands of a small number

The problems are complex on one level, and simple at another

The latter is voters almost complete ignorance of how Parliament works (see above).

However odious what Truss is doing I know I did not vote for her party so bear no responsibility. Imagine you had voted for a coalition party that was propping up the Tories. Is it the government you voted for.

Ah, the PR numpties will reply. With PR the 45% tax reduction would be a reduction to 42%, bankers bonuses would only be paid on every other day and some benefits will be increased in line with inflation, others won't

However in the real world it is an either or situation. And elsewhere, as with the current cabinet, coalition partners are rewarded enough to keep them on side (see 10/15)

What would happen is best explained by reference to the last page of Animal Farm, with the voters (being the farm animals) are outside staring in.

What sort of political representation would you like to see Harry?

You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

Any chance of pulling together a nice little summary of the good points on both sides just for us politically naive PR mullahs?

I’m sure you can read, and I’m not your PA.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

It is not what I want, it is about pointing out the fkaws in PR - which is notable by the sheep who will happily bleat out

PR good, FPTP bad baa baa "

But have so far not been able to address those flaws.

However while I wait (as either Vladimir or Estragon) I will point you towardss another failing in UK pilitics that we have to assume is acceptable because one day the PR fairy will wave her wand and make it all better.

The garrulous gutbucket is currently absent without leave. Filling his pockets in the US. No sanction and barely a complaint

Innumerable Tory MPs will have been in court today practising as a barrister, when not in thir chambers doing likewise. Again no complaint, or even comment.

One Tory has been banned from the Parliamentary estate for quite a few months. Again ...... How is he able to represent his constituents ?

The reality is that no system will come anywhere near being perfect. Voters will not get what they want. 14 million in the case of brexiters. But that does not mean we should not be actively removing glaring flaws - 2nd/3rd jobs.

And there is the thought that much of this continues because people delude themselves that 'they are all as bad as each other' and if a massive layer of accountability and choice was removed...... it .... will....err... some how be better.

And also change the terms of reference for the Speaker so we do not have some fawning idiot with a speech defect sat in his high chair will little purpose other than as an ornament.

None so blind as those who will not see, eh Harry.

I don’t get lead in my voting by posters on here ( I’ve voted for all parties, never led by cult like fanaticism), but this specimen, who happens to be my MP, has virtually lost them the next election on her own. I knew she was odious when she left Ipswich off the Liverpool St to Norwich in 90 campaign! An MP in Suffolk literally damaging the local economy out of spite! Will East Suffolk go red? Probably not, still got the Woodbridge/ Aldburgh stretch to contend with.

She's also anti-Northern Bypass too despite it directly benefiting the largest Town in her constituency and presumably any one North of Ipswich which is just about everyone in her constituency?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Generally you make reasonable political points H, but this:

"I prefer to know who I am voting for (person) and who will be in government should my choice succeed. "

is not one of them.

Because, if your choice doesn't succeed, you have no other means of determining the composition of the Govt...

PR sounds like a good Idea, till you realise you're likely to end up with the Brexit Party as the 3rd largest party, much as we saw in the EU parliamentary elections where we used to pick our MEPs

It was always rather ironic that the EU offered a more democratic system, which of course was one of the supposed bug bears of Brexiteers

More democracy and all that jazz

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
