I really meant it was a mistake from a political perspective, rather than a 'what's best for the country' or moral correctness.
I think in most situations it is a mistake to sack your leader while they are a serving PM with a majority. The electorate knew what they were getting in 2019, it was priced in. |

A PM is leader of their party because she has the confidence of their Parliamentary party. That leader is appointed as PM. Once that confidence goes, so does their authority, as with Johnson.
Such is his ballsup on Covid and much else that he was regarded as a liability long before they booted him out. This was witnessed by the opinion polls and the unprecedented three by election losses of safe Tory seats.
And, I would suggest, that having made such a monumental ballsup of so much else there were not that many willing to put their names forward, bar a few incompetents and nutters, for the leadership battle. I suspect that had the Tories called GE at that point there is every chance they would have won.
Callaghan and Brown held on, delaying a GE, and lost. It maybe a moot point whether they would have won otherwise. But there is always the risk of 'events dear boy events'. Something will crop up...almost never good news.
