The World Cup 2022 missing list 13:36 - Nov 30 with 2928 viewsTalkingBlues

Italy - still unfathomable to me that they are not at the World Cup and the competition is all the poorer for it IMO. They've won the bloody thing 4 times and recently won Euro 2020!! Crazy.

A long list of missing African nations we've been used to seeing in the past also, containing a whole heap of the best performing players in the world, surely something needs to be changed to provide for more nations in the competition at future events?

OK, so what was your point about Italy?

Lol, same as the rest, shame they're not part of it. They have a very long and distinguished history in the WC and it's a shame they are not represented at this years event.

Just the same as the other missing nations, a shame they are not represented in 2022. Perhaps it's more relevant to me, given that they have such a long and distinguished WC history.

If that's the outcome, so be it, but I reckon if you offered San Marino the opportunity to play at the World Cup, they'd bite your arm off and not care if they did lose by a large margin.

Someone came up with a good idea for teams like that. A pizza cup international event which can run at the same time as the world cup. Teams like San Marino, Andorra, Gibraltar and others from around the world could then get a taste of tournament football. Maybe even give the winner an automatic place at the next world cup?

For me, that totally devalues the World Cup. It's meant to be about the best teams meeting on a world stage.

Creating space to allow teams to attend simply because they want to is like awarding everyone a medal on sports day for taking part.

OK - so my question would be 'why' do we need more teams? How many and how do you choose them?

As I said, we have a qualifying process at the moment, are you saying it isn't fit for purpose?

I disagree wholeheartedly.

Italy aren't there because they weren't good enough, finishing behind the world's dullest team, Switzerland, in what was a really weak group to start with.

The African teams there already are of a mixed quality tbh, and whilst it would be lovely to see someone like Salah on the world stage, there will always be good quality players missing.

I'm very much of the view that the current format and numbers of teams from each FIFA area is about right to ensure an interesting tournament and competitive games. The next world cup with 48 teams will be a farce, in my opinion of course!

I do not accept that Italy are poorer than every team currently represented at the WC in Qatar, yet that is the inference made as they are not represented, the same goes for other teams not present. I don't think the qualifying process is inclusive enough, or indeed representative enough of recent form (given that most Countries qualification takes place between 1 and 3 years prior to the actual WC).

I think it all needs a shake up.

The more teams the better really as long as it doesn't become a joke with best third placed teams going through etc.

I would be happy to see it expanded from 32 to 40. Keep the format the same but with an extra group game. 8 groups of 5, top 2 go through.

Trouble is, the qualification process takes place years before the actual event, so the best teams "currently" in the world might not even be represented at the tournament, but rather some of the teams that were good a couple of years ago are, regardless of current form.

Perhaps the process needs revamping to reflect current form and be more inclusive?

I don't know the solution, or have any specific numbers in mind, but I do think there are problems with the process that is used to identify participants for the upcoming WC events and it needs to be reviewed and updated.

I'm not convinced it adds much - the assumption seems to be more is better.

We can already see there are a number of teams that look very much out of their depth. Adding more teams is not going to guarantee that the quality on offer increases nor will it ensure that the likes of Italy are in the WC.

Again, what is wrong with the current qualifying process?

How much longer would the WC run for? I feel we are at the max already and I remain unconvinced of what adding more teams 'actually' bring.

I love the group stages. I don't think another 8 teams would significantly weaken it and I like my idea with 40 teams much better than FIFA's with 48.

If you look at the teams who just missed out, do you think it would be better or worse with Italy, Peru, Egypt, Norway, ROI etc?

For me it would be better. I love seeing games we only see at word cups. Europe vs Europe is boring. Another 8 teams would seem the perfect expansion for me. As for how much longer would it take, i'm sure we could get creative.

But would it strengthen the WC every time? That's the question.

I'm not sure Peru, Egypt or ROI are any better than Wales, Iraq et al

As for Italy, they were poor, ended up below the Swiss, so would they increase the quality?
