Plymouth + Sheff Wed 18:58 - Jan 2 with 5571 viewspennblue

whether we like it or not, they are a season ahead of us.

Sheff Wed were only just pipped by Sunderland last season and Plymouth were strong last season and faded. It is highly likely both teams would have learned lessons from last year.

I do hope we get top two this year of course, and we may well do, but these two were bang at it last season as well.

This whole idea that you can transform a club in what 18 months is really not the case. Well run clubs, ala Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton took years to build, and get to the Premier League. They just make steady incremental improvements each season.

Enjoy the ride, before we know it, we will be in the Premier League getting battered most weeks.

Football is very much about momentum, especially for promotion chasing teams. At the moment that momentum is with Wednesday and Plymouth with Derby and Barnsley also pulling themselves gradually into the race for the automatic spots. Along with Wycombe those teams hold the top 5 spots in the form table over the last six, we have slipped to eighth.

However, we now have a couple of weeks with major opportunities to switch momentum towards us.

We have the transfer window open and as KMK said in his thinly veiled challenge to the board, we need to recruit well. We have seen before how one or two key additions can reignite a team.

We have a 'nothing to lose' cup tie against an opponent with only one win in 10. Morale boosting win or concentrate on the league if we lose.

We have a home game against Plymouth. A chance to ignite our campaign and put down a marker.

Feels like a key period in this season.

Nah, I don't agree with that at all.

I posted yesterday accusing people of overreacting to our wobble and other teams results, but make no mistake, not getting promoted this season would be a dreadful result and not good enough. With the funding and resources we have we absolutely should be aiming for top 2.

We're not the finished article, and we clearly need a better centre forward to complement Ladapo, but not going up should not be normalised as being acceptable.

Plymouth are the big issue - us and SW have the biggest budgets in this league and should be the top 2 - but Plymouth are currently on track for 103 points and you just can't compete with that and if PAFC carry that on one of us or Weds will miss out.

At the start of the season if you were to offer Ipswich fans 90 points we'd have all bitten your hand off for it - if we get that then McKenna has done a fantastic job. If we get that and don't go up we have to lick our wounds and do the same next season.

I think the injuries and illnesses in the camp have really screwed us in last few weeks, especially when been on the road a fair bit. Little quirks of the fixture calendar haven't helped us either but that is neither here nor there.

We will refresh things in January, McKenna knows more about League 1 now and what is required and he will be backed. We just need to take then next 10-12 days to get everyone right and get a couple of bodies in before Plymouth game and beat them
