When you've moved home, have you notified DVLA? 15:56 - Jan 12 with 6485 views | The_Flashing_Smile | I've only just realised you can get a £1000 fine for not notifying them, although my licence is registered at my parent's address who I visit regularly, so I still have access to any mail from them. Does this therefore count as one of my permanent addresses so I don't have to inform them? Was starting to fill out the form to notify them anyway, because I thought why ever not? But then it wants all my addresses for the last 5 years. When they realise I've moved a few times without informing them are they going to hit me with a fine, or is all that forgotten now that I'm fessing up?

I did something similar when I was back at Uni, never bothered to update my driving license constantly but whenever I was asked for X years of addresses, I always put them down to the best of my knowledge. Was never questioned. |
You will be exempt when at Uni, your primary address, such as your parents address if still living at home when not at Uni, is perfectly acceptable. Next time you're out and about, look at the number of cars driving around with L plates attached and just the one person in the car driving, that's illegal and, something that you could receive a fine and points for! The only person allowed to drive the car alone when displaying L plates is an approved driving instructor.

Of course living at university gets a specific mention on the DVLA website. "You do not need to tell us if you move temporarily (for example you’re living away at university) if we can still contact you at your permanent address." But it is only an example, and I for one regarded my parents address as my permanent address for the purposes of being contacted whilst renting in London for a few years after leaving university, and didn't change the address on my driving licence until I was settled. Another factor in this is that I didn't really want official communications going to a rental address, particularly after I had left it. [Post edited 13 Jan 2023 18:43]

Maybe all the one-person cars driving around with L plates attached are driving instructors.

My car is pretty smart, it's like driving a computer, but it's not a smart car.
