Squad size and keeping everyone happy and involved 09:24 - Jan 21 with 784 viewsringwoodblue

Four very good additions to the squad in the Jan window and McKenna now has (I think) 26 players to choose from this afternoon.

Even with rotation, Hayes, KVY, Edwards and Ahadme look to have little chance of getting on the bench. He also has a decision to make on Penney (loan out again or sell), Ahadme (loan agreement with Burton) and Keogh (move to a coaching role)

This situation will test McKennas man management which seems to be one of his strengths but how will keep them all happy and involved and is now the time to let a few of the fringe players go?

I'd argue that all of our fringe player's have had over a year to impress KM. Either here or out on loan....
As much as KM comes across as a complete gentleman. There comes a time when he'll realise that all the coaching and motivating in the World won't be enough to push some of them up to the standard required. A standard that is continually improving, too.
With that in mind, not sure he has to keep all of them happy. A few of our fringe player's days are numbered, imo....Sounds harsh on a few, as I'm sure they are trying.
...Reality is, if we keep improving the squad at the current rate, over the next 18 months or so. Which we will do.Then there will be, some of today's nailed on starters, pushed to the fringes, too. Unless they find another level. The good thing about all of our big money signings in the last year, Walton,Davis,Broadhead,Clarke, is, that they arguably, are nowhere near their ceilings. So should be sound investments alongside our progress.

i see his role as getting 15/16 wins from the remaining 20 games to ensure we go up as a far bigger challenge than keeping them all happy.

many of them players have had half a season to prove their worth, and if its not happened for them yet, im not sure it will

We’ll be good again... one day

Well that's the art of being a good manager. If they all feel involved and are aware that no one is a given in the team it should create a need to perform better and that is possibly the reason for a bit of a slump in form because a few know that if they don't perform there's no one that's going to take their place. Two or three, along with Penney look on their way out. Donacien has according to reports been carrying an injury and doesn't give the same attacking outlet as Davies on the other side. As the guys on EADT said maybe another wide player might be brought in. Two or three may be de-registered and I do feel that should we achieve promotion another CB needs bring in, but's that's for next season and dependent on which Division we are in.

I think he'll simply use a lot of players in different games, both starting and off the bench.

Individual tools for different tasks. You don't use a chisel to bang in nails. That's why we spend all this time and money on analysis.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I dont think he has much to worry about with Aluko and Keogh. They are both seasoned pro's who will accept a squad role and they know they will be leaving at the end of the season.

Penney will be off, Piggot is out of the picture, Ahadme needs to go to Burton. KVY may get some bench time, but will know his time is up.

Re Hayes, his situation hasnt changed. He's always bee 3rd choice keeper and still it.

Edwards is less clear, maybe head out on loan?

I dont think he'll have a big problem keeping the team ethos going for the next few months.
