We really haven't managed CM options very well..... 13:10 - Feb 15 with 3698 viewsitfcjoe

.....and it is really hurting us.

Bearing in mind Humphreys was seen as a squad player at start of season and we clearly wanted 4 senior guys in there....

We signed Camara on very last day of window who had an ongoing injury problem.....he said he only found out about the move in the morning of deadline day so presumably no thorough medical was able to be done....the player with clear red flags has proven to be an absolute non-contributer this year.

Dom Ball picks up a bad injury, this seems more unlucky than anything because he has generally been a resilient player in his career.

Lee Evans suffers bad injury, but he is a player who has only played 50% of this teams league minutes 3 times in his career - with one of those times being last season where he still missed 19 games. The most minutes he has ever played in a league season is the equivalent of 32-33 games. And if you believe some of the genuine ITK people around the club there was a seeming view that he would go down in the second half of the season

So in January we turn to Massimo Luongo, who due to injury played the equivalent of 48 games across 3 seasons for Sheffield Wednesday, and was unselected for Boro for half a season (may have been some unknown injuries in that period)

So effectively in the squad we have 2 senior CMs who could be described as durable in Morsy and Ball, one of which we know is out long term....but even Ball has never played more than the equivalent of 27 games in a 46 game season.

We were told no stone would be left unturned in January but the CM problems were fairly predictable and have come to pass.

Meanwhile Idris El Mizouni puts in another starring performance for Orient last night - 15 ground duels won, 10 tackles won and a goal.

Meanwhile Posh chairman MacAnthony says they were still getting bids in for Jack Taylor (presumably from us) as the deadline shut.

And then to really top this - when we play Pompey in the Papa Johns, Morsy starts, when we play Buxton in the FA Cup, Morsy starts....in both games v Burnley, Morsy starts (when in home tie we had Humphreys and Luongo on the bench).

We've got one senior CM fit, he's walking a suspension tight rope and he has been flogged more than anyone else in the squad. He's played over 200 more minutes than Christian Walton, he's played nearly the equivalent of 4 games more than Woolfie who is 3rd in the squad on minutes.

Opting to go for Luongo over El Miz has been a mistake, and is one of the resons why our engine room has spluttered in recent weeks - hopefully Ball and Luongo can get fit sooner rather than later to try and stop this derailment of the season and give us a good base to finish the season well and, realistically, go into POs in a decent vein of form

I agree on all of this, we were saying last night about the no stone comment from Ashton and it’s not really played true with the CM position.

Wasn't Broady more of a tight hamstring rather than cramp?

It was described as cramp of both hamstrings. Caused in part, we are told, because we run and press more than his last club did. But again, a professional athlete unable to start two games in a row. WTF is going on?

Clarify something for me please coz I really bugs me.

If we are playing against a deep sitting side who have no interest in playing the ball across the backline.
What high pressing game are we playing?

I always thought the high press was there to win back the ball against sides playing it around at the back.

a niche perspective

I'd say that El Mizouni's performance at Hillsborough last season was better than that of either of our central midfielders at home to Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday.

Not a criticism of Humphreys, not sure he was the right player for that game and understandable given the fact that Morsy's played pretty much every minute he could.

Very left field but anyone think KVY could sit in midfield?

In theory, during the Jan window, we had Morsy, Evans and Cam Humphreys, fit and available. And although Evans was likely to pull up again. Who would have foreseen him on crutches and out for a really. Long period? Should think, the idea was to use Luongo and Humphreys as rotational players to try and spare Morsy and Evans a bit. El Miz was trialled a fare bit last season under KM and was less than spectacular
So the manager has had a decent look at him, and doesn't fancy him..Well probably see Humphreys go out on loan next season.... The Luongo signing looked ideal, imo, had he been fit. After us missing out on our first choice target.........
More to the point. Someone needs to be held accountable, for duff advice, on players fitness, before we be signed them. Luongo and Camara in particular. KM, appears to work on player profiles, when looking for a signing. I can imagine him identifying a player that would do a job. But he's not the one examining them. And I'm sure he's pretty fkd off with some of these walking wounded signings. Especially, considering that "robustness", was his buzzword , in the Summer...
Looks like we are going to have to improvise a bit in MF. Maybe a Clarke or Wolfy who was tried there earlier in the season. Of course it's not ideal. But we can't continually go with Morsy and Humphreys. And as much as I like C.H. He was awful last night. He simply had a bad game....
Back in the day, it was quite common to see a player used in several positions to cover injuries..Mick Mills had some great games in CM. Think he played there when we beat Man Utd 6-0.. So going with a Clarke, Wolf or whoever, is better than flogging the only two we've got in CM..Might as well try someone in their. We are going to be forced to, soon, anyway.

Plymouths loan signing of Jay Matete is one I'm very jealous of.

You’re right, it’s like trying to fit a Cessna engine on a Boeing 737, it just ain’t gonna fly.

You could argue we’ve been unlikely with injuries to CM but bearing in mind how many players we have in other positions it’s a major contributing factor to our downturn in form. Recalling El Miz in Jan was an option but not sure he is really going to be up to the task. With Morsy injured or suspended, can you imagine playing Humphreys and El Miz together?

I don’t think we will get many minutes out of Luongo, Ball or Camara until it’s too late in the season.

our defence has a major mistake in every game .walton dropping a simple ball on his goal line was the latest. our forwards can't control a ball ,it seems the ball doesn't stick always bounce a yard in front of them. then the crosses seem to go the near post when they are all at the back post or vice versa. the forwards can't seem to sort themselves out for crosses .

forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows
