The European Convention on Human Rights 16:58 - Mar 7 with 902 viewsDJR

The only European countries which are non-members of the European Convention on Human Rights (which has nothing to do with the EU) are Belarus and Russia.

Rather shockingly the Illegal Migration Bill just published contains the following statement from Braverman "I am unable to make a statement that, in my view, the provisions of the Illegal Migration Bill are compatible with Convention rights [ie. those under the ECHR], but the Government nevertheless wishes the House to proceed with the Bill.”

The upshot is that we appear to be following the Russians and Belarussians in cocking a snoop at human rights, which is something which, given the history of the ECHR, I don't think Churchill would have approved of.

In the light of this, shame on any Tory MP who votes for the Bill.

I'm sure Churchill would have approved of the racism 🙄

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

It’s only a loss of human rights if it affects their human rights.

The root cause of this is obviously Brexit - a yes vote has given the UKIP wing of the Tories the fire power to implement dangerous backwards ideals. The Tories Brexit bunch knew full well that it would be utter folly to leave. They know that the country will be seen as an idiotic fringe should we leave the convention. But they don’t care - they are traitorous scum and history will judge them as badly.

Now, a desperate party are relaying on all that they have - demonising the poor and demonising foreigners. Utter scum. And anyone who voted for them are obviously complicit in their support.

Carrying on the lyrics theme of another thread, perhaps the Clash put it best.

They say it would be wine an' roses
If England were for Englishmen again

With Sunak now holding a press conference behind a lectern with the words "Stop the Boats", it is clear that the UK has become an inward-looking, international laughing stock.

You just couldn't make it up.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has issued the following statement.

"The legislation, if passed, would amount to an asylum ban — extinguishing the right to seek refugee protection in the United Kingdom for those who arrive irregularly, no matter how genuine and compelling their claim may be, and with no consideration of their individual circumstances.

The effect of the bill (in this form) would be to deny protection to many asylum-seekers in need of safety and protection, and even deny them the opportunity to put forward their case. This would be a clear breach of the Refugee Convention and would undermine a longstanding, humanitarian tradition of which the British people are rightly proud.

Most people fleeing war and persecution are simply unable to access the required passports and visas. There are no safe and “legal” routes available to them. Denying them access to asylum on this basis undermines the very purpose for which the Refugee Convention was established. The convention explicitly recognises that refugees may be compelled to enter a country of asylum irregularly.

Based on the Home Office’s most recently published data, the vast majority of those arriving to the UK in small boats over the Channel would be accepted as refugees were their claims to be determined. Branding refugees as undeserving based on mode of arrival distorts these fundamental facts.

We urge the government, and all MPs and peers, to reconsider the bill and instead pursue more humane and practical policy solutions."

I expect this is no more than the pre war German lie of the 'stab in the back' claim. Something so many are desperate to hear.

As with 1984 there is no rational conversation, just another bogey man to blame, them there hinterlechshewalls thass hew.

Thickos who prefer to listen to Lie Anderson MP, rather than have their nonsense challenged.

Today Cruella upped the levels of stupidity when she claimed 'yesterdays laws were not fit for purpose', rather dimwittedly ignoring who had implemented them - previous Tory Home Secretaries. The odious Patel being one of those responsible.

The Tories now find themselves in a mess of their own making. Having lied, lied and lied again to get thickos to vote for them, they now find those same thickos are demanding their stupidity be delivered on.

So we have the sight of our Home Secretary spouting what even someone as ignorant as her knows is a lie. You cannot 'send back' anyone unless the country receiving them agrees. So far very few seem to want to oblige. Odd that.

Even when they do, unless those arriving by boat have documentation you cannot 'send them back'.

"Hello Albania, another plane load, not sure where they all come from, you'll have to sort them out when they arrive "

"How are we supposed to know if there are any dangerous criminals among them. Since Brexit we do not have access to that data base, I'm afraid.... tootle pip, old boy"
