in praise of the nh.s. once again
story starts on tuesday with wife going in hospital for a hip replacement. later that day she rung that all had gone well.
Wednesday i had appointment at drs for nursing assistant to take yearly blood test for cloistral. she asked how i was during the taking of blood , i told her i had been feeling out of breath and tired but i put it down to long term covid symptoms.
she told me to ring the srgery in the morning to see the dr.
thursday i rang surgery at 8 am and was told a dr would ring me back later.
9.15 dr rang explained my symptoms. he told me to come at 9.50 and a nurse practitioner would see me
when i met her she said i looked anaemia ,so she would due 6 blood tests.
went home and had a phone call that wife was being discharged from hospital that afternoon. picked her at 5 pm.
at 7.45 had a phone call saying they were blood testing lab and i had to be at ipswich straight away for a blood transfusion. not to drive and to ring for a ambulance if i couldnt get any one to drive me.
so phone calls to son and daughter for one to drive me to ipswich and one to stay with their mum.
so to cut the story at midnight i was having blood transfusion witch went on till 5.am
got a bed 6am .later on i was giving iv iron transfusion. at 4pm after more blood tests i was allowed home.will have to return later for the camera down throat and up the rear. to see if iam losing blood internally.
so wife out of hospital in the afternoon and me in at 9pm
for the medics i had 2 units packed RBC IV iron and blood test at the lab was 63
so rested all day today and had a great suprised to ee the town had won 2 nil
WHAT a GREAT N.H.S. some one working in the lab at 7.30pm and to ring me.

Hope all is well. Yes, our NHS is great. Chronically underfunded but still doing a great job despite that.

I am not familiar with the throat version but the worst part of the other one is the preparation. At least there are some pleasant things you can still eat for a while beforehand (chocolate for one). Follow their instructions well, though. Read it as soon as you get it and plan it out. I have known some turn up without having done all the prep!

You will be as clean as a whistle!

Peeing out your ar5e is not fun as I know personally but you wont need an oil change for another 10,000 miles!

Seriously, it is a thorough and effective test of your insides and will detect a bleeding ulcer if that is what is causing the anaemia.

Like you I’ve only had the back door camera one and I can’t claim it was the happiest moment of my life. Jeez. But NSBlue is right. Follow your instructions to the letter, grit the teeth and it’ll soon be over. Got to be done. And if you are invited as part of a screening campaign as I was, take up the offer. It’s worth it.

The mush doing the job (whatever they pay him isn't enough) invited me to watch the action on a tv screen. ‘You have to be joking’ says I. ‘No way!’ was my response. I settled for chatting with the pretty trainee nurse holding my hand.

Mrs C has to have the camera down the throat job every couple of years. Unpleasant, but her view is if offered anaesthetic (bit like a pre-med) take it.

As an aside, I think locally things are improving a bit with the NHS/GP service. I was invited in for a health check as I’ve not been for six or seven years. It was pretty thorough I must say.

I just wish the marvellous people that do work I’d neither be capable of or willing to do were supported properly by those running it and the politicians deliberately starving it of money. A round of applause isn’t anywhere near enough.

My Mrs has had both throat and bum. They will give you something like Valium with the throat camera. So you’ll be awake but calm. They did a few biopsies whilst down there as a precaution but I think that is standard and nothing to be concerned about. It turned out to be an ulcer caused by her pain killers she is prescribed for a back problem, so they changed the medication. Are you on Naproxin or similar?

You’ll be sore and uncomfortable for a day or so, so eat soft food like marshmallows. Nothing too hit or too cold.

All the best.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

No pain at all. And no symptoms of blood in ruined or stools. Just anemic. So they put her on iron tablets whilst waiting for the camera.

She’s out at the moment so I’ll ask her if there is any more useful information when she’s back this afternoon.

Right I’ve spoken to her. She had it twice last year (I’d forgotten about the second time).

Firstly, she said don’t worry. It sounds worse than it is.

They will give you the choice whether you want a sedative. If you get anxious then it’s best to have it. My Mrs asked for the sedative both times, but they forgot to administer it in the second and she said it was a worse experience without.

They will leave you for thirty minutes and then give you a throat spray which tastes like rotten bananas. That numbs the throat.

You won’t feel anything during the procedure.

If you have the sedative then they will put you in a room for a couple of hours until you feel ok.

The only reason she was sore for a day was because they took 5 biopsies. They didn’t take a biopsy the second time and she had no soreness after the procedure.

Hope this helps.
