Football League quiz 15:43 - Mar 17 with 1323 views | Miaow | Sorry for yet another football quiz... I've just put this one together on every team that was first elected/promoted to the Football League in the post-War years. There were three in 1950 (including one close to home) and then there has been an average of, remarkably, about one per season over the last couple of decades or so. A few of those featured are phoenix clubs which previously played in the League before going bust, and 12(!) of the total of 35 are currently alongside us in League One. Only one is currently playing above the third tier. There are eight minutes to try and get them all. At present, 50% of the teams in the top half of the Conference/National League (6 out of 12) have never been in the Football League, so it might not be long before we have another, although they definitely won't be automatically promoted this season given the ridiculous form of both Wrexham and Notts County. https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/1696326/every-new-football-league-club-sinc Thanks very much for having a look. âš½ Additional recent football quiz here: https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/1696326/english-football-league-trophy-winn

Thank you, that’s very kind! One little note I didn’t add was that the last team to join the Football League before the War was, of course, a certain Ipswich Town. Also, I find the two that were elected in 1962 and 1970 respectively quite satisfying. 🎓

Thank you! And to deliasplums as well. Peterborough were only formed in the 1930s (replacing Peterborough & Fletton United) and won the Midland League title five years in a row before being elected to the Football League, and they duly won the Fourth Division at the first attempt, ahead of Crystal Palace, in what was only the third season of a nationwide fourth tier. They also did so by scoring 134 league goals, which remains a record. There were a number of attempts to get a football club going in Wigan in the past, and one of those teams (Wigan Borough) was a member of the League for ten seasons in the inter-war period. I believe Wigan Athletic’s first-ever season in the second tier was the year before they pipped us to 2nd in the Championship. The team that Wigan replaced in the Football League in 1978 was Southport, members themselves since 1921. Southport are currently 16th in the National League North.
