We’re now hosting Saudi Arabia friendlies ... WTAF?!! on 16:20 - Aug 17 by Ryorry | We'll see won't we - if people give him that chance. As it is, some people are doing a really good job of dividing Labour voters & running the risk he won't even get it. |
Starmer will not change this countries foreign policy with regards to Saudi. That’s not dividing Labour voters. That’s stating a reality. The only politician who would have reset our foreign policy so drastically was Corbyn. Not making a comment in whether that was right or wrong. Just stating the world we live in. It's just part of the incessant blaming of him for things he's not even had a chance to change yet, & constant bashing of him that gets me - if it carries on, he might not even get the opportunity to do anything. Shortsighted & self-indulgent pontificating = potentially damaging.

Interestingly, Robin Cook started off seeking an ethical foreign policy but I think it rather ran into the ground. No doubt economic factors, and even trade union influence, will always play a part, so long as we are so heavily dependent on arms sales. And strategic interests are an even bigger factor. Of course, there clearly is an ethical dimension to UK foreign policy in the sense that in respect of certain countries we do bang the drum, it's just that we turn a blind eye to abuses and the like in countries we support strategically. And I find that a bit hypocritical. [Post edited 17 Aug 2023 17:26]

As GB suggested, I doubt many will care if Starmer (as he will do) continues UK support for Saudi Arabia. Indeed, in some way, sportswashing is useful for the politicians in the sense that it shifts the blame to, say, Newcastle rather than onto UK government policy which encourages such economic links with Saudi Arabia. GB confusing opinion with fact. Rather ironic given the behaviour of kGB Vews and their distortion of the truth. But never mind. Why criticise the present government or those in power for the past 13 years when you can invent stuff about what a future government will supposedly do. However, some might note our pet rightie seems to accept that Labour will form the government after the next GE.

We’re now hosting Saudi Arabia friendlies ... WTAF?!! on 10:04 - Aug 30 with 370 views | DJR | This in the Telegraph is pretty shocking https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/08/29/mohammed-al-ghamdi-death-sente And if you can't access the article, here are two passages from it. A Saudi court has sentenced a retired teacher to death for criticising the ruling family in messages to his nine social media followers. Last August, a Leeds University doctoral student was sentenced to 34 years in prison when she returned home to Saudi Arabia for the summer holidays. Salma al-Shehab, a 34-year-old mother of two, was accused of “assisting those who seek to cause public unrest and destabilise civil and national security by following their Twitter accounts”.
