Don’t mate.

Apparently we are the only team who plays our strongest 11 players.

Thus having a slightly weaker but more than adequate bench.

As was Hutchinson in my opinion, two assists in a week - looks like an astute signing.

Now we are seeing him used wide yes.

This is what I was excited about from his YouTube videos. Didn't look as great when in the middle.

Definitely offers us more on that right side.

Mick Mills' thoughts are that we have managed to improve the squad over the summer. What he hoped to see was us elevating the starting XI, recruiting players to slot into those #1-5 spots in the pecking order, although he's sympathetic to the reasons why in his view this hasn't happened. FFP wasn't one of those reasons interestingly and he thinks we'll 'go for it' if we remain strongly positioned come January. Instinctively I feel he is less conversant in this arena of spending restrictions, rather than knowledgeable of significant headroom in our budget.

The next window will be when we look to see which positions need to be strengthened. Problem is the only way we can comply with the financial rules will be to sell.

Suspect we will only sell if we are offered silly money for a player and feel we can replace them with money left to improve other positions.

Mick Mills is right but the current squad is, collectively, significantly stronger than the individual players taken in isolation.

Good summary that.

My sense is that the market was a lot more expensive this summer than we had assumed, those 1-5 spot players costing £5m+ rather than the sub £1-2m basket we had been shopping in last season.

I suspect you're right with your assessment of the finances. If there is headroom to strengthen the starting XI without substantial sales then it won't be enough to forget the importance of eeking out every bit of value possible in the market (or passing on players if there is none).

Your last line is bang on the money for me. 'Greater than the sum of its parts' has been the buzz phrase in my quarters. McKenna alluded to it in his post-match comments when he said he's currently extracting the maximum from the squad.

I quite like old Mick, but thought his comments displayed a profound misunderstanding of FFP. We have players in Davis, Walton, Broadhead, Hirst/Woolfy who could command fees of £5m - £10M. if he thinks we are going to bring in 4 players who are going to be the best 4 players at the club, how much would that cost? Well in excess of £20M. Going by his logic, we would breach FFP and suffer a points deduction.
The ownership and management of the club are very astute, and managing finances and recruitment properly and professionally. All the "Chequebook fc" calls seem a long time ago now. Yet here we are in 2nd place with a stronger squad than ever. Top marks to GC20.
