Always had some respect for Graeme Souness after hearing how he stood by Howard 19:54 - Nov 9 with 2257 viewsWeWereZombies

Gayle who was on the receiving end of racist abuse from Tommy Smith and fought back. Now even more appreciative of the guy:

'Football legend Graeme Souness raised more than £1m by swimming the English Channel to help support people living with rare skin condition Epidermolysis bullosa (EB).'

Edit: My memory well and truly is going, it wasn't David Barnes, it was Howard Gayle. And it wasn't Ron Yeats, it was Tommy Smith. Motto for the day - always fact check.

Wasn’t it Howard Gayle that Souness backed against Tommy Smith? Barnes never played for Liverpool and Ron Yeats wasn’t at Liverpool while Souness was playing there.

He lives not far from me and the local news channels have interviewed him about this from time to time over the past few years, particularly leading up to and after his Channel swim. This has affected him enormously and he is desperate to help improve the quality of life for Isla and other sufferers. I have nothing but the utmost admiration for GS and my heart goes out to Isla and her family.

I can respect him for his off field conduct, but his on field conduct was an absolute disgrace. Openly admits he use to go onto the pitch to intentionally hurt the opposition. Fair play to him for doing this, but my memory of him will always be a total d1ck of a footballer.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.
