Re your last point, you’re right of course. People love to simplify complex problems. It’s a common affliction of the stupid.

Although baxterbasics is a fair way down the simplification path. There again we have to present ideas in a manner in which they can be understood, too much detail and the message drowns under incomprehensibility (I'm probably in danger of heading there now maybe.) Occam's razor is often portrayed as simplifying things but the actual English wording is not to multiply entities beyond necessity i.e. don't over complicate an issue but, equally, don't leave anything out that is essential to understanding. So the acronym KISS fails because Keep It Simple is not always sufficient, and the final word 'Stupid' is superfluous and unwise to include in a plea for simplifying because it immediately alerts the recipient for the instructor's preference for insult in place of utility.

Yes my explanation was also deliberately simple. But it does grind my gears (to use another phrase kicking about recently) when people who don't identify as 'right-wing' use it as shorthand for racist/intolerant/wanting the poor to starve.

Then there is the separate but related libertarian/authoritarian scale, or the personal freedom vs security debate. Which do you value more? As one who leans libertarian, I found it most strange during Covid to see so many people demanding stricter measures against their freedom from a government they claimed to hate.

(also - I did see what you did there!)
