Leeds wasn't as bad as we think 10:07 - Dec 25 with 6931 viewsRIPbobby

Fair enough 4-0 looks like a comprehensive thrashing, but was it really that bad; I don't think so...

First half was a really tight affair. We were not that bad. Leeds had 3 shots on target that half and scored 3. You have days like that where everything goes there way. The bounce of the ball, ref decisions, everything went for them. Hladky only had to make 1 save and that was to keep out the first effort for their first goal. Generally speaking it was an even half, but everything they touched turned to goals.

The second half was dominated by Leeds and yet they only had 1 shot on target and scored. In spite of them playing with confidence they didn't hurt us. We knew the game was over and played within ourselves and rested key players.

I think that result will hurt Leeds more than us. They are going to think they are world beaters and expect to turn up to teams and just beat them. That won't happen. Just look what happened to West Brom since they beat us. They have been awful.

Our team ethos is about working for results and we will continue to do that. Teams won't be able to live with our movement and work rate. There will be 1 or 2 additions in January that will booster us once again. Believe in the system folks, it will work.

But isn’t football in general, outcome orientated?

It is and it isn't.

Ultimately, results are all that matter, but we all know the score line isn't the only thing to say about a game, we all know that score lines don't tell the whole story.

I remember a game in Lambert's last season where we beat Blackpool 4-1 away and everyone talked about how we'd battered them, what a brilliant performance it was etc. But on that day we scored from 3 of our first 4 shots and all three were chances you don't usually score from. If we'd had the same chances and missed them all, you wouldn't have been sat there thinking "cor, we've battered them here, how aren't we 2/3 goals up?" The outcome didn't necessarily tell the story of what the two teams were (Blackpool ended up getting promoted), even if it felt like we'd humped them at the time. It was just one of those days where every time we shot we scored, which isn't what normally happens in football.

That sort of thing happens (in that case, perfect finishing every attack, in our case on Saturday, a goal-causing individual calamity every attack), it's usually just a "one of those days" thing, rather than indicative of a broader gap in quality.

(The lack of impression we had on them going the other way, on the other hand...)

Indeed. To highlight, our xG for in the home game against Norwich was higher than Leeds' was against us, and Leeds had a penalty which accounted for nearly half of their xG and their first goal was a tap in and likely accounted for most of the rest of it. It was one of those where the game was dead by half time because there was no way we could come back from 3-0 down against a side with that much quality, but the 3-0 scoreline didn't really reflect the pattern of the first half. We hit the post, Broadhead put one just wide from a decent position, Hladky made one save the entire half and that still ended up with them scoring. Would have been nice to go out and pull one or two back but they were able to just control the game at that stage and it wasn't really worth us killing ourselves trying to chase a game that was effectively over.

Still miserable as sin, even on Christmas day.

If that’s how you describe realty then yes I do indeed live in the real world

Leeds have thrashed Ipswich twice AND beaten Leicester but are seven points behind Town whilst Leicester are disappearing over the horizon. That suggests Leeds will drop plenty of points against rubbish teams Southampton might be more of a danger IF Town’s confidence takes a dent over Jan.

Thrashed us twice? They beat us by one goal at PR and were pretty relieved to come away with the win after being under the cosh for most of the match.

He is probably right with his Southampton comment, as they will, in my opinion, finish above Leeds.
