I think the challenge is that the bigger the fee the higher the wage demands so greater risk of disrupting the current squad who even with promotion increases will be below the kind of weekly wage someone over 20 million would be on.

I wouldn't have thought there'd be a hard limit per individual player, more an overall budget with an idea of how many people we want and the priority of each position. Within that, a great deal of flexibility.

Personally, I would not be surprised to see us spend over £20m, given prices in the Prem nowadays. But then again, over the last couple of seasons the club has shown a good eye for high quality bargains.

It wouldn't make much sense setting a limit. What if we set £20m and then someone who ticks every box becomes available for £22m? Would make no sense at all to pass due to some random limit.
