Jimmy Anderson 14:57 - Jun 12 with 1334 viewsZx1988

Day 5 tickets for the West Indies test at Lord's (Sunday 14th July) went on sale today - potentially Jimmy Anderson's final day of test cricket.

Plenty available and only £25 for adults, £5 for kids, fully refundable if the match finishes before Day 5.

Seems a pretty good deal for the chance to be there to send off one of the true greats of the game.

What are the chances of a test match involving England reaching day 5?

I'd hazard perhaps only a 25% chance and, even if it does get to Day 5, it probably won't last too long. That said, just one rain-affected day might be enough to push it into Day 5.

Either way, I see £25 for even one ball as a very good price to pay for the privilege of having been there at Jimmy's last hurrah, if it gets that far.

I'm already going on the first day so if Anderson is fit, I should see some of his last Test (unless it rains or England bat all day). I also saw most of Alastair Cook's last Test innings of 147, having had day 4 tickets for the Oval.
Normally, I don't agree with sportsmen choosing their own farewell international appearance ( unless the go quietly like Nasser Hussain) but I don't begrudge Anderson his fly past, given the career he's had.

In the situation its probably a fair thing to do for him.

I am not sure he would actually want to retire from International cricket given the chance. It feels like England is moving on and looking to the future, which has kind of forced his hand. A real shame as I am not convinced his replacements will be currently any better. Anderson is still a very good bowler, even though he didn't have a good Ashes compared to his normal high standards.

Reading between the lines, and having listened to what precisely Jimmy has had to say about things, it does seem that way.

I imagine that the conversation was along the lines of "you won't be going to Australia in 2025, Jimmy, so we'd like you to step aside so that we can develop the young talent. Be a good lad and we'll give you a send-off at Lord's".

It's a tough one, because if there was a young cricketer out there with Jimmy's current figures (someone called Timmy Banderson, for example), he'd be a shoo-in for the team. To my mind, it's for Jimmy to be displaced rather than being told to make way. I was rather hoping that he'd be able to continue until the Zimbabwe test next summer, and rather poetically bring his career full circle before bowing out.

I think his time is well up. His wickets in his last 2 series have cost over 50 runs apiece. I think the tap on the shoulder & a farewell at Lord's is the right thing to do, although it will be interesting if he takes a 5-fer.

The one thing about JA is that he keeps coming back and proving people wrong. I recall both him and Broad got dropped because England wanted to look to the future and pretty soon they were both back in the fold.

I hope he does get a 50fer and ends it on a high. Stuart Broads last test was a fantastic way to say goodbye.
