Would we have a shot of signing Lindelof? 15:33 - Jun 20 with 1483 viewsMercian

He is available for "A reasonable" fee with Fenerbache interested. He's just turned 29, is left footed, has 178 league appearances for Man Utd and 68 caps for Sweden. He is also totally unflappable. He would be great but maybe out of our league.

Presumably wages.

Exactly. I think I read previously that he was on £130k a week at United.
Now that we're Premier League, we'll have to accept paying £40k a week to our some of our new additions, but that will probably impact on the contracts of our current top earners too.
Bringing in someone on £50k+ would be a disaster in waiting.

The biggest challenge Ashton and McKenna might have this summer is how to handle wages.

You've got a tight knit squad that will be on relatively similar wages. Let's say £5k to £20k based on squad role. That's probably likely to be £10k to £25k now with bonuses and increases.

I don't think anyone in this squad has a problem with Fotis coming in for example on £30k or even £40k. None of them are £25m players.

But we've all seen how a team that finished 5th with an amazing spirit and brought in the likes of Sereni and Finidi fell to pieces really quickly, some of it luck, some of it Europe, but that's always the possibility that if someone comes in on twice the money of another player they have to really justify that they are worth that over the season.

It's why the likes of Sheaf and Rodon make sense and why players from Greece or Croatia are going to be attractive, where the sort of other clubs looking at them the same will pay them much bigger wages than they are on now, but not so huge that us paying them risks destroying morale. Bologna and Sporting Lisbon may well be Champions League but they will be paying the sorts of wages we can stretch too before we get to levels that likely upset the group unless that player is immediately an absolute superstar.

think to much is made of the finidi and sereni effect. it wasn't their purchases that got us relegated and their wages etc, poor transfer moves out, injuries and a euro campaign with a small squad was the killer.

We missed Stewart for a while
Wilnis played half the games he had managed the season before
we sold scowcroft and wright who were influential in the 00/01 season - imo scowcroft sale was one of the biggest reasons for our relegation. He was then what Hirst is for us now.

a niche perspective

I think Wright was the big loss - he was a great sweeper as well as shot stopper. Also pissed that it was needless as Seaman stayed on for an extra year and Wright was just a bench warmer.

wholeheartedly agree - Plug was a real fans favourite, and I have no doubt that his confidence grew and grew because he had such superb support ("England's, England's no.1, England's no.1") - as his confidence grew, his performance got better and better, and the whole team knew they had a great last line of defence behind them. When he left, it ripped a huge hole in us. No one was ever going to fill that hole. And even at the time, we knew Wright wouldn't be the same at Arsenal, wouldn't get the support, wouldn't be allowed to make any mistakes. It really was a lose-lose, the biggest of any player at Town in the 55 years I've been supporting.

Poll: would you rather
