Forget Sunak/Starmer on 10:50 - Jun 28 with 602 views | Herbivore | Both of them are years past retirement age. You wouldn't want an 80 year old surgeon operating on you or an 80 year old firefighter turning up to put a blaze out, so why on Earth are we putting forward candidates of that age to run the most powerful country in the world? It's a physically and mentally demanding job and it's going to go to someone of an age where they'd have been forced to retire from any other job as mentally and physically demanding. America seems to love an old white man.

Yes, that blog nails it. I hadn't considered Al Gore. The man who had an Election stolen from him, but stood aside for the good of the nation, versus the man who lost both popular vote and Electoral College and started an insurrection in response. That's how I would bill him, anyway! "The nation needs healing. America needs a President with the character to put service before ambition, responsibility before status, country before self. Vote Gore in 24."

Not sure 80 year old firefighters or surgeons are fair comparisons. Mental agility and strength coupled with a lifetime of experience could, in theory, make an 80 something still able to do the job. Especially if that person was good at delegation and was well supported, like any president would be. THESE old fellas... you have a point, but not as a rule.

But it's a biological fact that physically and mentally at 80 you have already deteriorated quite a lot and will only continue to do so. There's a reason both come across as incoherent at different times, their brains aren't functioning as effectively as they were 20 or 30 years ago. There's a reason some of the more competent presidents of recent years have been significantly younger than these two. Clinton and Obama were in their 40s when elected and, although both had their faults, I'm sure the US would be in a much better place with one of those two in charge.

Bill Clinton was US President 30 years ago and is younger than both Biden and Trump - I've said this before but needs reinforcing just how incredible a fact it is.

Yep, it's absolute madness. I'm not saying you should be out out to pasture as soon as you hit retirement age, older people have plenty to offer, but it's madness that we've got an octogenarian and another candidate not far off vying to be president. Very few 80 year olds are still working full time and with good reason, let alone running the most powerful country in the world.
