if banksy had had his way on 08:44 - Jul 5 by GeoffSentence | They are not all the same, that is the last desperate argument of a loser. Might as well vote for us because we are all the same. This Labour is certainly closer to the Tories than I would like, but it is not the same as what we have had to endure for the last 14 years. |
My vote had neither Conservative or Labour on it. I just see politicians for what they are. But if you are right, I shall watch in anticipation for this Labour Utopia to arise. [Post edited 5 Jul 2024 8:50]

Utopia? I guess you are being facetious there. Progress is what I ask, given the mess they have to clear up even that will be a long hard slog. But at least this is a step in the right direction.

On all fronts we're in a better position today than we were yesterday. I'm prepared to take that and move on. Ultimately we unequivocally need the changes you want, and there's not much time, but we're a little bit closer or at least not as far away as we would have been otherwise.

Which is why I said, "as it stands."

if our resident anarchist(s) had had their way on 09:28 - Jul 5 with 1931 views | Whos_blue | Banksy and AB, it's day one. Many of us did what we needed to do to get the dreadful tories out of government. That's been achieved and some. I don't suppose for a moment many of us are completely enamoured with Starmer's Labour, but we had to do what we could to ensure change occured. We've got that change now and we have to give it time to settle until we evaluate how effective it will be. It might, as you both seem to espouse, be just as bad. But on day one, can we at least give it a chance?

I think we'll all be scrutinising and passing judgement on this new government long before that. We've done our bit. We've swept away the tories. It's now a case of "Over to you. We're watching". Edit: And for what it's worth, I'm looking forward to engaging with my new LD MP. It's the first time in over 20 years I haven't had a tory MP. I'm genuinely enthused by that. if banksy had had his way on 08:30 - Jul 5 by Coastalblue | We have a two party system, the red team and the blue team. The red team may be a bit better than the blue team currently, but if you don't particularly like either team then you are entirely discounted. FWIW I think the old boss was the most despicable PM in my lifetime, but honestly, I'm not very inspired by the new one either. |
Worse than Johnson and Truss?

Life this morning is indeed a bowl of cherries compared with yesterday, so I had some for breakfast! Feels a bit like 1997 - massive relief and happiness at a ten ton weight being lifted off after 18 and 14 years of oppressive tory misrule.

For me yes though appreciate others may see it differently. I think Liz was just totally out of her depth and didn't really know what was going on, probably having her strings pulled. Boris I think has a little bit of humanity in him, though I'll admit he buries it a long way down and is probably very selective about where he points it. Rishi? I personally think he's the pinnacle of the modern politician, cares not one jot about the electorate, is only interested in self gain and actually is generally smart enough to be able to do a decent job if he viewed it and the wider population in a different way. Unfortunately the two main parties appear to be full of people like that now, mostly to a lesser extent admittedly and think those who may genuinely want to serve the people even within the Labour party are very few and far between.

the tories have been utterly incompetent and self-serving, starmer has at least successfully run a public organisation, and has surrounded himself with people with long records of competent public service (like sue gray). if he's true to his word and immediately acts on ministerial misbehaviour (instead of "throwing an iron ring around the prittster" as a boris example), then trust will begin to be restored there too

Recognisable improvement in education and healthcare (outcomes and provision), measurable reduction in poverty levels, some reform of employment law for starters. If any progress on political reform was made and rolling back of Tory anti-protest laws was made, that would be great too.

Yeah all fair, as long as this is done in a way that doesn't just result in the middle class fronting all the bill as seems to often be the case with many governments (one just gone included). Thriving middle class is sign of a true 1st world country. Think current labour plans re private school tax could be short sighted and counter productive though. I don't have any kids at 32 yet, but I can see it stopping those middle class parents that sacrifice alot to get their kids in private schools from affording it now, meaning more kids back in crowded public schools. Whereas 20% increase in cost is a drop in the ocean for the Eton type, making private schools even more a place for the elite only. I dont really share the political views of a alot of people on here, being more to the right, but I do agree with the right to protest as a fundamental part of democracy (even if alot of them get on my t*ts! Haha) [Post edited 5 Jul 2024 11:56]
