But, by all accounts, there hasn't actually been one. According to Phil, the only bid that Hull have accepted has been ours. It seems to me that the agent has been trumping up the interest of Barcelona, Palace, Everton, and now Villa in order to try and wring a few more quid out of the deal and, one would imagine, into his own pocket.

Yep, he's sailing close to the wind to be honest, he only has Philogene on his books, so he's clearly trying to milk that cow, but he needs to be careful being too greedy...

He comes across as the amateur that he clearly is. Prob just a mate or relative. We've seen it before.

Greed is a huge problem with agents. An acquaintance of mine is an agent - as he is Chinese, his main thing was trying to get players into the Chinese league when they were splashing the cash around. He actually succeeded in getting a very high profile Premier League player to sign for a club out there, and stood to make well over a million out of the deal. All he had to do was stay in China with the player for the duration of the contract and make sure he was looked after. However, he was consumed by greed and instead spent most of his time trying to get other players onto his books. He completely neglected the first player, who then refused to pay him - I am not sure if he got any money out of them at all. One other player he signed went out there and then jumped ship back to the UK pretty quickly. They then had a dispute that resulted in both of them suing each other. I don't think he's had any success since, and instead of setting himself up for life with the first player, he has ended up with nothing. I was semi-involved in some of this, and it was fascinating in a slightly surreal way - I got called out at midnight to be the witness on the first player's contract (signed at their ridiculous mansion) and also chaperoned another player when they were on trial in China (the player hated Chinese food and I ended up taking him to a Pizza Hut as it was the only western food we could find), meeting Sven in the process (he was managing the team that they played in a training ground friendly). I even got a free trip to Switzerland when he took the second player to the CAS. However, it was an absolutely horrendous business - other agents were trying to take the players. The acquaintance offered me double my salary to come and work for him full time, but I wouldn't have been able to work in that field.
